Dear (Contact First Name) |
 | Sadie sharing her styling decisions with Judith and the class. |
I'm coming up for air, so to speak, after going full speed for the past six weeks -- but what a ride it's been! First, Conselle image management consultants were here for a Retreat in January, focusing on getting themselves re-wired for better business plans in 2012. Of course, we managed to do a little personal shopping together, too. Next, women determined to achieve a fabulous fit for themselves came to Utah for our Fabulous Fit Retreat. It's a non-stop journey in cause and effect with constant attention to detail. I never cease to be delighted by their joy in reaching their goal. Then we geared up for another Educational-Training in Image Management Careers, with student participants of all ages from coast to coast. Even though we work with a highly structured curriculum to keep us on target, there are always new learning experiences and applications with each student that provide new awareness and insights. While sleep may be in short supply, I am never tired or bored!

What's NEW this year is my Fashion Rule of ONETM, introduced for the first time to Conselle affiliates at our Retreat and Educational-Training -- the topic of my new book. Now I want to share it with you, my readers. My Fashion Rule of ONETM relates directly to the art of dress, the topic of February's Newsletter and Conselle's Wardrobe Strategy #2, Art In Everyday Dress.
Sincerely,

I hear it continually from my students, my clients, and callers, "I just don't know how to put an outfit together." Some people say the ability is inborn, intuitive, a talent. You either have it or you don't. Some people say it's not definable. Others say you can't teach it. Nonsense.
I say we need to have a guideline for styling an outfit successfully. I say it's got to be easy to understand and easy to apply if everybody's going to be able to do it. What is it we need to know? It's my Fashion Rule of ONETM, easy to understand, and easy to apply. So let's give it a try.
My Fashion Rule of ONETM Applies to Each of the Elements of Design.
Within any outfit, there must be ONE dominant type of line and shape, ONE dominant color, texture and/or pattern. Any other lines, shapes, colors, textures, and patterns must be subordinate, less important, or less attention-getting. It's the dominant elements that contribute to the mood and message communicated. Subordinate elements introduce related messages and make the outfit more interesting to look at.
 |
|
You can't miss the ONE dominant color in this sporty outdoor outfit. It's obviously orange with subordinate colors in the other garments for interesting color contrast. The ONE dominant texture in the outfit is soft as seen in the knits and down-filled coat. Subordinate textures are seen in the shiny metal belt buckle and leather boots. There is no obvious pattern to consider. The ONE dominant shape in the outfit is rectangle, with subordinate rounded shapes in the cap and tiny ties at hemline. The One dominant line type is straight, with subordinate curved lines in the coat collar and cap. Line directions are complex, with the horizontal belt and bright metal belt creating the ONE dominant focal point. Vertical front closure lines add subordinate interest to the outfit.
My Fashion Rule of ONETM Applies to the Point of Emphasis.
Within any outfit, there must be only ONE dominant point of emphasis, center of interest, or focal point. Call it what you like, they refer to the same place on an outfit that attracts your attention. Any other points of interest must be subordinate -- less important. Viewer attention may be drawn to subordinate points momentarily, but always returns to the dominant point of interest in the outfit. If there is more than one dominant point of emphasis, the outfit will appear spotty as attention jumps from one point to another, never coming to rest on one dominant point.
 | Dress: Shade Clothing |
There is a lot to look at in this outfit, not wonderful as is, but not awful either.
The question comes when we consider the point of emphasis or focal point. Is it at the waistline bowed tie belting or at the necklace and collar area? Which is stronger in its attraction? While the necklace appears stronger to most viewers due to the contrast in shape and color, attention does get hung up on the bowed-tie belting. Omit the bowed-tie belting and replace it with a 1" apple green leather belt with a moderate size bronze or brass buckle. The ONE dominant focal point is then the necklace and collar area. Take time to talk it through and my Fashion Rule of ONE works as a guide every time.
Your challenge now is to check your own outfits for my Fashion Rule of ONETM. Look for ONE dominant line, shape, color, texture, pattern and only one dominant focal point or point of emphasis in every outfit.
It is fascinating to note that what is true about my Fashion Rule of ONETM in dress, is true in all forms of art -- be it a painting, sculpture, architecture, graphics, scrapbooking, interior decorating, display, landscaping, food presentation, and the design of a car, boat, or airplane. Start watching. Seeing is believing.

Timeless Truth |
Some of your clothes work better for you than others. Why?
- They work because of which elements of design have been selected and used.
- They work because of how the elements of design have been organized or arranged.
- They meet your needs.
- They enhance your appearance.
- You like the way you look!
- The clothes are in harmony with you -- the lines, shapes, colors, textures, and patterns combine to create a theme, mood, or message in harmony with you.
Your task is to recognize that usage. It's not only what you wear, it's how you wear it! What works for you becomes what you prefer. What you prefer can develop into your personal style.
|
Consumer's Corner
|
 | What do your clothes communicate? |
Begin teaching your family and friends Judith Rasband's Fashion Rule of ONETM. For school and business, they are smart to create that dominant point of emphasis up near the face with a collar to communicate that they are serious about their work and to hold attention on their face for continued communication. The collar can be on a shirt, sweater, vest, or jacket.
Teach them to change their clothes after work or school to encourage a more relaxed, even playful mood and feeling.
For social occasions, the dominant point of emphasis can rest on the shoulders, chest, waist, wrists, legs, or feet depending on your role and goal.
That brings us back to the dominant theme, mood, or message you want to communicate. Teach your family members to seriously consider their intent in choosing what to wear. Will the outfit they put together aid them in achieving their goals -- in the home, the school, the church, the community, or in the workplace? Whose attention do they want to attract, where do they want the attention to go, and for what purpose, intent, or goal. It makes a difference in where they want their life to go.

Consultant's Corner
|
 | Teach your clients about Judith Rasband's Fashion Rule of ONE. Help them see where the emphasis in their outfit is. Photo: Team Liquid |
You are welcome to begin teaching your clients Judith Rasband's Fashion Rule of ONETM. It will be fun to see how fast the concept catches on. If in doubt, think about the time-tested fashion phrase, "Less is more." The trouble with the phrase is that it's not self-explanatory. Few people know what it means. Just like Judith Rasband's Fashion Rule of ONETM, "less is more" means that more than one dominant theme, line, shape, color, texture, pattern, and/or point of emphasis in an outfit is distracting, confusing, and self-defeating. Judith Rasband's Fashion Rule of ONETM identifies what we need to know. Despite media proclamations that "anything goes" with anything else in an outfit, don't believe it. Don't you be the one turning out fashion victims. Dress your clients with style and ease and you'll stay in business long after the look has been declared a disaster.

Tips for a Fabulous Fit -- Dress Slim
|
 | Watch for bra bumps and bulges like these. Photo: thornberry |
Everywhere we go, we see people whose clothes don't fit. With the exception of low-slung pants, the clothes are generally too tight. In newspapers, magazines, and fashion blogs, we read about the distracting bra bump, belly bump, midriff bulge, and muffin top exposed by too tight-fitting clothes.
My dress slim guide, closely related to my Fashion Rule of ONETM, states, "Clothing silhouette dominant, body silhouette subordinate." It's as simple as that.
If we will buy into clothes large enough to allow some ease between the size of the clothing and the size of the body, the clothes will skim smoothly over the body without revealing those distracting bumps and bulges. If you want people to focus on your face, on who you are and what you have to say or do, then don't let attention focus on your body. Clothing silhouette dominant, body silhouette subordinate. It works!

In Closing
At the Conselle affiliate Retreat, I had to smile as several affiliates told me I had surely lost weight since they last saw me. "No," I told them. "I weigh exactly the same as I did this time last year." "But I can see for myself," announced one affiliate with an air of authority. "Not," I affirmed. Following a few more protests I added with a smile, "I just know how to dress slim," and they couldn't argue with that.
Learning how to dress well so you can forget yourself and get on with what you want to do and accomplish in life is a worthwhile goal. It's something that's never too late to learn.
Sincere Best Regards,
Judith Rasband
