 Greetings!

Greetings from the North Country where today the humidity is high the temperature is high and both are on the way up tomorrow. Having said that we have not matched the high temps in Tonto Verde. It is hard to believe how time flys, here we are at mid-July and many of us are already planning our return to Tonto.

The calendar for the coming year is up and the early events along with the major events are featured in the Upcoming Events section of the Divot Digest. You may want to check the full calendar and make your plans for this year. Also, if you have not responded to the survey from the Golf Shop a link is in Jeff's item and he would appreciate your taking the time to complete the survey.

From The President

One of the major responsibilities of any organization is to make sure adequate risk management policies are in place.  Tonto Verde Golf Club competed the annual insurance renewal process though our broker Wells Fargo Insurance Services, with the assistance of member Mark Bloom.  New policies are effective July 1, 2013.

Zurich American Insurance Company, an A.M. Best A+ rated company, will insure our primary property and liability coverage.  The new package policy includes some additional enhanced coverage which makes the renewal very attractive.  With more stability in our golf operations and settlement of lawsuits, we are able to obtain a slight reduction in overall insurance costs.

Two significant changes to our insurance coverage this year include General Liability limits of $10 million, an increase from $6 million.  In addition Director's and Officer's limits were increased to $2 million from $1 million.  These changes required minimal premium increase while at the same time offering more protection to the Club and its volunteers.

As I mentioned last month the Board has experimented with Webex as a vehicle for electronic Board meetings.  Our next meeting is scheduled for August 1st.  Although there are no burning summer issues on the agenda we all believe staying in touch with other directors and employees will be a big benefit when we have our formal meetings beginning in November.

Notes From Your Pro

Greetings golf members. Summer is almost halfway in the books and we're actively preparing for the upcoming season. Group leaders can check their email inboxes as we've just sent out Group Play Request Forms for the 2013-2014 season (November - April). Requests are due in no later than October 1st which will allow us plenty of time to schedule and book these times. These forms will also be available on the Foretees home page.

We'd like to thank the 44 players who participated in our 4th of July Flag Game and recognize the 13 who managed to plant their flag in the winner's circle. Congratulations to Rod Brethower, Bob Dietsche, Ron Zinke, Cindi Pendergraft, Gene Baumhover, Chris Bates, Bill Banholzer, Wil Lewis, Pete Demma, Charlie Cooper, Bill Mead, Tom Daly and Dean Hall!

The end of season sale is over which means we're starting to get new merchandise in the golf shop. Stop in to check out the latest styles from Nike, Footjoy, Sport Haley, Travis Matthew and Maui Jim.

We are always striving to improve our golf operation and your feedback is very valuable in helping us plan for the future. If you haven't done so already, please take a few minutes to fill out this short member satisfaction survey. We thank you in advance for your thoughtful responses.

Click Here to take the survey.

Remember to set your alarm clocks early next week to tune in to the Open Championship at Muirfield in Scotland. Keep an eye on how many times the players use a putter or hybrid club from off the green. This is a more consistent alternative that golfers should strongly consider before chipping and pitching around contoured greens. Until next time, keep em' flying long and straight!

MGA News

Since it was first invented, golf has been a game of honor and integrity.  Always has been and hopefully always will be.  As golfers we are our own referees, umpires, and officials, whatever.  And with that comes certain personal responsibility to the game.  That responsibility goes far beyond just knowing the rules and etiquette of the game, especially with regard to competition and handicaps.

Handicaps are used in golf to allow players of varying abilities to compete against each other on a more equal level.  However, in order for the handicap system to work, we need to be ever mindful of those words "honor" and "integrity.  What does that mean?  First, it means we are honor bound to attempt to shoot the very best score we can every time we play.  Second, it requires us to make sure our postable scores get entered into the system every time in a timely manner.  Third, it is imperative that each score be posted accurately.

Why are these important?  Because, if any one of us fails to take responsibility for each of them, the handicap system falls apart.  If a handicap doesn't truly reflect a player's ability, the honor and integrity of the game fails to be maintained.  For example, a player who knowingly "tries harder" or "concentrates better" when "It counts" will likely have a handicap that isn't entirely accurate.  Likewise, scores that don't get posted for whatever reason (forgot, wouldn't have counted anyway, the pro-shop was closed, etc.) may not reflect a players true handicap at the time.  And, of course, accurate posting requires a degree of diligence, i.e. making sure to use equitable stroke control, selecting the right tees and course played, double checking the score entered, knowing the rules for penalty strokes, marking the score you would "most likely" have made on a given hole if you "picked up" etc. etc."

Remember you are your own official.  If you love the game of golf and wish to uphold its time-honored tradition of integrity, you have a personal responsibility to make sure your scores get posted and posted accurately.

Golf:  It's a game of honor.

The First Tee of Phoenix

The practice area was alive with the energy of youth on Sunday, June 23rd as the Tonto Verde Golf Club hosted an Odyssey Club event for The First Tee of Phoenix.  Seventeen people, including the First Tee's highest performing participants, along with their coaches and mentors arrived around 9:30 A.M. to prepare for a round of golf on our Peaks Course.  Several of the young people came with parents and siblings, some of whom enjoyed the comforts of our clubhouse, and others escorted the players around the course.

Four of our members, Tom and Donna Daly, and DeWayne and Gail Anderson each joined one of the foursomes and enjoyed playing a round with these fine young people.  I drove around trying to keep everyone loaded up on Vitamin Water and snacks, and got to talk a little with each of them.  Aside from playing some impressive golf, their overall manner and behavior was equally commendable.  It was a fun day for all involved, and one truly appreciated by those kids and their families.  Once again, I thank you all for your continued support of this fine organization.  Enjoy the rest of your summer and come back to us safe and healthy in the fall.

Nine & Dine News

We are the Tonto Verde Nine and Dine Women's Golf Association or NDA.  The NDA provides a fun, yet competitive, environment for women who choose to play only 9 holes of golf, while improving their game.  Supporting the concept of improving their game, the Rules and Etiquette Chair regularly shares information on new or modified PGA or Tonto Verde Golf Club rules.  Cash prizes are awarded at the end of the season placing emphasis on attendance, recognition of competitive event winners, pars, birdies, eagles, holes-in one, Interclub and Dream Scores.

While wishing you all a wonderful  and fun-filled summer, the NDA Board members are looking forward to your safe return to Tonto Verde for our first 2013/2014 NDA event.   The "Welcome Back Wine and Cheese" is scheduled for Monday, November 4, 2013, 3:00 p.m., at Linda Carpenter's House.

As we look forward to next fall, there are some housekeeping items we'd like to address.  If your name, email address or phone number was incorrect in the WGA/NDA /Lady Putters Directory last season, please email your corrections to NDA Vice President, Diane Kirk, dkirk@centurytel.net, ASAP.

The NDA is looking forward to growing its Social Membership Program.   NDA Social memberships are available to women who have previously been a golf member of the NDA for at least one year.  This includes women who have since surrendered their Tonto Verde golf club membership.  This category of NDA membership allows women to participate in the NDA monthly business meetings and luncheons; and NDA events, outside of the golf portion.  NDA Social members sign up for NDA monthly business meetings and luncheons on ForeTees by selecting Club Events and registering under the Events tab.  The NDA Social Membership Form and dues are mailed to the NDA Treasurer. NDA Social Membership Annual Dues are:  $40.

For more information on the NDA and its various membership programs, please contact the following NDA Membership Committee Chairs:  Molly Casey, tollytwo@gmail.com; or Barb Rottunda, jbar118@hickorytech.net
