As we transition into summer the publication schedule for the Divot Digest will change. For the months of June through September there will be one Divot Digest published on the 15th of each month. In October we will resume the 1st and 15th schedule.
As we wrap up our first season with the Divot Digest we want to thank all of the contributors for their cooperation and adherence to our schedule. Everyone is busy and taking the time to put their submissions together is not always at the top of the list. They are the ones that have made the Divot Digest the useful and successful addition to the Tonto Verde Golf Club experience that it is.

 | From The President | As we reflect on a wonderful golf season there are many thanks to our professional staff for excellent course conditions, a strong lesson program, exciting group and tournament play and a focus on TVGC members. One year ago Jeff Ostlund, Head Golf Professional, and his wife Donnielle, were in brand new roles and responsibilities. They have learned much during the year and grown professionally in their positions. The supporting cast of highly qualified golf staff consists of Tom Crowley, Matt Finch, Steve Haagenson. Ross McClean and outside services supervisor, Dick Bianchi. The Golf Shop staff, outside services and rangers have zeroed in on customer satisfaction for our membership. Dean Hall has maintained our courses for the maximum enjoyment of all members and guests. We continually hear praises from many sources for the excellent condition of fairways, greens and playability. This year Assistant Superintendants were appointed for each course: Chris Soto (Ranch) and Alan Adams (Peaks). We thank all the Maintenance staff for their hard work and dedication. A shout out to Tenna Dillon, Controller, and Sherry Dee, Administrative Assistant, for doing the behind the scenes work to keep financial and administrative systems running. Gary Loving, Sales Director, has generated a large number of new member prospects and closed a number in the last month. Next year should be an exciting one with our new membership programs and marketing focus. Stacey Marlow has provided all golfers with fresh sandwiches, hard boiled eggs, beverages and her positive attitude. Thank you to all staff for all you do for the Tonto Verde Golf members. We very much appreciate it! Scott Thiss

| 2013 - 2014 Dues Selection |
I encourage members to pre-pay their annual dues. Our financial model is front-end loaded with expenses for overseed and course improvements during the first six months of the year. Outside revenue grows and offsets early operating losses in the last six months of the year. This combination creates an awkward cash management problem. Please consider helping us manage our cash flow for your benefit.
Thru May 14th 197 members have made their selection and responded to the survey. Of that total, 93 members (47%) have opted for the annual dues payment. It would be wonderful if we could hit the 130 mark.

 | Summer Hours |
Just a friendly reminder that our Golf Shop Summer Hours begin next Wednesday, May 15th.
Summer hours will be: Wednesday - Sunday 6:00am - 3:00pm
The Peaks Course will be closed from May 14th - June 9th. During this time, golf members are welcome to play on the Ranch Course 7-days a week.
We have built in a light blue tee sheet reminder each day beginning at 11:30am. Golf members are still welcome to play in these blue time slots. These are simply a reminder that, due to the heat, we will not be sending out any white rental carts after 11:30am each day. All white carts are expected to return to the outside service staff by 3:30pm unless otherwise arranged with the Golf Shop.
Thank you and enjoy the summer!!

| From The Course |
Thank you to everyone who competed in my Super's Challenge last week, I believe a fun time was had by all. Thank you also to Stacey for helping us out with food and beverages and also the golf shop staff for their assistance in putting the event together. Congratulations to Tom Schouten, Brian Potter, Bill Banholzer and Ron Zinke for being the "Pink Ball Champs"......always thought you guys would play better with a pink ball!!
As I'm typing this report, we are hosting the AGA's Arizona Senior Strokeplay Championship. So far I've heard nothing but great comments from the AGA staff and players. I need to commend our entire Golf Course Maintenance team who put forth a great deal of effort last week and worked all weekend to get the Peaks ready for Arizona's finest senior amateur golfers.
As of today, the Peaks course will be closing down for some Spring/Summer cultural practices, it will reopen Monday June 10th. Please check the website for our summer schedule.
You may have noticed a change to the way we are placing the bunker rakes. We are now placing the rakes OUTSIDE of the bunkers. We still have the blue paint dots which indicate where we would like you to enter and exit the bunker and also replace the rake to that same spot. It was decided this was the best way to proceed as with our new bunker preparation having the bunker faces smooth down to the raked area, the rakes were often an obstruction to the ball reaching the bottom of the bunker and causing an unfair result to you the golfer.
For those still here, please observe the 90 degree cart rule. Drive down the cart path until you reach the first golf ball, enter the fairway at 90 degrees, stay in the fairway until you've hit your approach shot to the green, then return to the cart path at 90 degrees.
Thanks again to everyone for a great season, stay safe and stay cool!
On behalf of the Golf Course Maintenance team,
Dean Hall
Golf Course Superintendent

3) Due to being a little overwhelmed with paperwork, all reconciliation of the Desert Classic Concept Shop and Hohokam Classic Trunk Show will take place next week. Please do not be surprised if you see a charge on your account that you did not make in May. Most likely the charge came from one of these two events.

 | From The Beverage Cart | No Beverage Cart 5/15 - 5/21. I will be on vacation May 15th through May 21st so there will be no cart service at this time.
Beverage Buggy Summer Hours: The summer hours are difficult to forecast at this time, however Jeff and I have decided that anytime there are 50 or more players I would have the beverage cart in service. I will keep an eye on the tee sheets and will post on ForeTees if cart service will be available.
If you plan on going out with a number of players on a Monday or Tuesday and would like to have lunch I will be able to provide a bag lunch. Feel free to give me a call and I will be happy to work something out.
I will update summer hours in the June news letter, also I would appreciate any input you may have. Please email me with your ideas. Have a great summer!

| From The Golf Committee |
As our season winds down we want to welcome the newest members of our Golf Committee. Julie Brethower (WGA liaison), Jack Kubitz and Fred Anschutz are great additions to the committee.
We want to give a huge thanks to Ed Carpenter for his years of service and the gentle, thoughtful guiding hand he provided during the transition. He was instrumental in formalizing the many various policies for the Golf Club including the group policies that work so well. Also thanks to Sharon Kroner who has transitioned to the Golf Board and Jay Simons.
Jerry Hanna (MGA liaison) and Suzanne Blanchard (CGA liaison) fill out the committee with Dave Burns as our Golf Board liaison and Jeff Ostlund from the Golf Shop. I will be the liaison to the NDA. Our next formal meeting will be this fall but we will continue to work on projects over the coming months by email.
Both golf courses were rated by the AGA for the men's tees last month. The Peaks course was rated May 2 by the AWGA and the Ranch course has been promised to be rated this month. It usually takes a couple of weeks for the ratings to be complete. The Golf Committee along with the Golf Shop and the AGA/AWGA will be working to review the hole handicapping as well. We will pass all information along to you in subsequent issues of the Divot Digest.
We look forward to a productive season and encourage our members to contact any of us with ideas and comments to make Tonto Verde Golf Club the best it can be.
Enjoy your summer!!!

 | First Tee of Phoenix News |
First, let me thank you for the many generous equipment and clothing donations you've made over the past year to The First Tee of Phoenix. Your support enables the organization to provide golf-centered life and learning experiences to over 9,000 valley young people each year.
One of the ways we, at Tonto Verde, will be supporting The First Tee of Phoenix this summer is to invite four groups of young people and their mentors/coaches to play golf on June 23rd. This event is called Odyssey Club, and a variety of golf clubs around the valley open their courses to The First Tee once per month, and the highest achieving of their youth get to enjoy new experiences in new venues. I'm very proud of the Tonto Verde Golf Club, and of your generosity. Thank you all very much.
As the date approaches, we'll publish more information in the June 15th edition of Divot Digest with specifics as to the tee times, opportunities to play along, tag along as spectators, and meet some of these young people. We tried, unsuccessfully, to arrange for this Odyssey Club event to occur earlier in the season in order to enable more of you to participate in some way. Hopefully, there will be another opportunity in the spring of 2014. Once again, on behalf of The First Tee of Phoenix, Thank YOU!!

Nine & Dine News
|
We are the Tonto Verde Nine and Dine Women's Golf Association or NDA. The NDA provides a fun, yet competitive, environment for women who choose to play only 9 holes of golf, while improving their game. Supporting the concept of improving their game, the Rules and Etiquette Chair regularly shares information on new or modified PGA or Tonto Verde Golf Club rules. Cash prizes are awarded at the end of the season placing emphasis on attendance, recognition of competitive event winners, pars, birdies, eagles, holes-in one, Interclub and Dream Scores.
While wishing you all a wonderful and fun-filled summer, the NDA Board members are looking forward to your safe return to Tonto Verde for our first 2013/2014 NDA event. The "Welcome Back Wine and Cheese" is scheduled for Monday, November 4, 2013, 3:00 p.m., at Linda Carpenter's House.
As we look forward to next fall, there are some housekeeping items we'd like to address. If your name, email address or phone number was incorrect in the WGA/NDA /Lady Putters Directory last season, please email your corrections to NDA Vice President, Diane Kirk, dkirk@centurytel.net, ASAP.
The 2013-2014 billing selection sheets are coming to you soon via email. You will need to select "Join the NDA" to be on the roster this fall.
For more information on the NDA, please contact NDA Membership Chairs:

| Cinco de Mayo |

This year we had 136 people participate in our annual Cinco de Mayo couples golf and dinner event. The "Drinco Goodbye-O Catina circled the course as the players contemplated the "Thinko de Mayo" hole, and targeted the "Amigos Kay Peos" hole and finally deducted the "Stinko Goodbye-O" hole from their score. Afterwards there was
great competition at the "Sinko" hole with 5 winners accurately hitting the floating targetmin the lake by the clubhouse to share a pot of $200 cash. The 3 Caballeros in the boat were never hit and remarkably never fell in. The chefs outdid themselves with the fabulous food and "D&G" played till everyone quit for the night after receiving various skill and door prizes. It was such a success that Pam and Tom Schouten volunteered to do a repeat next year. Put it on your calendar now so you donʼt miss out on the fun.
