 Greetings!

Hopefully we are finally through the "Frost Delay" Season! That said we still enjoy some of the best golf in the Valley thanks in large part to the Dean Hall and our crack maintenance staff. One only has to travel to other courses in the area to realize what we have here at Tonto Verde. Also, if you have the chance congratulate Dean Hall on his great play in the GCSAA National Championships.

Over the past two weeks there has been some improvement in the cigar butt issue but the cigarette filter issue continues unabated. While this to some extent may be an outside play issue please help by throwing that, and any other trash, in the waste containers

Notes From Your Pro

Greetings golf members! Peak season is in full swing and the tee sheets are reflecting it. Remember to check Foretees a week in advance as early as 7am to get the best selection of starting times on the days you desire to play. If you have guests in town and need to secure a tee time more than a week out, utilize one of your three preferred tee times by calling the golf shop.

New merchandise has been flowing in over the past few weeks. Check out the latest ladies apparel from Sport Haley and Greg Norman along with Wallaroo hats. We're also stocked with new men's styles from FootJoy, Peter Millar, Nike, Straight Down and Greg Norman. If you're a bargain shopper, take a peek at our new clearance area underneath the Byron Nelson display where all apparel has been marked down to 40% off of retail.

Stacey has brought in a few new gals to help out on the Beverage Buggy. Katie, Keli and Karen will all be assisting with your on-course food and beverage needs. Please give them a warm welcome when you have the chance.

We have a few more club fitting opportunities on the horizon. Cobra will be joining us again on the range this Sunday, March 3rd from 11:00-4:00. Titleist will be here on March 28th from 10:00-3:00 to show off their new line of 913 drivers, fairway woods and hybrids . Sign up for an appointment on either of these days in the golf shop. Steve Haagenson will resume his Thursday fittings on the range on March 7th. Thursday (2:30) clinics and Saturday (3:00) clinics are also available to help you improve your scores. Until next time, keep 'em flying long and straight!

From The Course

Just when I reported last month that we were finally experiencing some warmer weather, what happens........another cold snap!  It was a great opportunity to take some photographs with the snow on all the mountains surrounding us, but wasn't great weather for golf.

I also reported last month that I was headed to the GCSAA National Championships in San Diego.  Although I didn't bring home the main trophy, we (Arizona) had a very successful week.  A good friend of mine, Charlie Costello, Superintendent at Phoenix Country Club, became the first ever Arizonan winner of the National Championship.  Charlie shot rounds of 73 and 74 on a very difficult Torrey Pines South course to win by 1 shot from 3 others.  I finished in a tie for 7th place, 5 shots back after a pair of 76's.  Ed Shimkus, Golf Club Scottsdale and Darrin Baker from Oro Valley Country Club (Tucson) finished 17th and 18th respectively.  Together the four of us won the Chapter Team event, again a first for Arizona.  Prior to the National Championship, Ed and I also won the National Fourball title...so it was a clean sweep for the Cactus and Pine (Arizona) chapter!

Over the past 3 months, we have begun using Soil Moisture Meters on all of our greens.  Measurements are taken daily in 10-12 locations across each green.  This device gives us an instantaneous digital reading of root zone soil moisture.  From this we are able to determine consistency or lack of consistency in the greens, identify potential drainage and/or structural issues and more accurately determine when we actually need to irrigate!  I hope you all agree, that after 3 months of trialling, we feel we have found our 'comfort zone' if you will, where we are providing a good consistent surface that is not too soft, nor too firm and at the same time have reduced water usage on greens quite significantly.

Good luck to all competing in the upcoming Club Championships and Member-Guest events.

We continue to strive for improvement and provide two quality golf courses that you are proud to belong to and also proud to show off to your guests.

On behalf of the Golf Course Maintenance team,

Dean Hall

Golf Course Superintendent
