Open Banner5"OPEN" for Business!

Look around downtown for the new "OPEN" signs!  In an effort to help business owners promote their businesses and invite customers to come in,  Renaissance Covington, Inc. is offering an "Open" banner and bracket for those located in the Renaissance Covington District.

The cost of the banner and bracket was $200 each.  The Renaissance Board of Directors voted unanimously to utilize recaptured facade grant funds to help underwrite the cost.  Due to this, we are able to offer the banner and bracket for $50 each!

Historic Preservation

historic plaque The City of Covington has an extensive number of historically significant residential, institutional, industrial, and commercial buildings. The City recognizes the increasing value of its historic resources and the impact of their contribution to the community's pride of place. This architectural heritage is an important asset in the City's increasing attractiveness to visitors and investors.
The City, in conjunction with concerned citizens, developed the Historic Plaque Program and Historic Register as a way to promote the City's rich past, recognize the investments made to preserve Covington's heritage and provide for a standard method, in the form of a wall mounted metal plaque, to display the significance of contributing structures.

If you are interested in participating in this program please click here for more information or call the Historic Preservation Office at 292-2171.

During the summer months FOPNA partnered with the students from St. Augustine School on two projects that were funded by Place Matters mini grants.  One project was a flower growing contest involving the students.  At the beginning of summer they were provided flower seeds to be grown and tended during the summer.  When school resumed in September they provided photos of the results of their growing project.  The three students who grew the biggest/best plants received gift certificates from John R Green.  The second project involved the students and members of FOPNA.  Each participant was provided a litter bucket, litter grabber and FOPNA t-shirt.  They were assigned a neighborhood street and asked to remove litter from that street one day per week during the summer months.  This involved 21 St. Augustine students and approximately 15 FOPNA members.  On December 1, 2008 all participants from both projects enjoyed a celebratory pizza party at Snappy Tomato Pizza on Orphanage Rd.  The gift certificates were also be awarded at that time.  Hopefully these will be ongoing projects for future years.
Regular monthly meetings are the 4th Monday of each month at the Center for Great Neighborhoods at 1650 Russell Street.  Block watch meets at 6:15 and the neighborhood association meeting begins at 7:00.

Do you know of a male, 21 years or older, who would be willing to spend one hour a week with a Covington student as a mentor?  Mentors are changing the lives of Covington students by listening, supporting, and encouraging them on a weekly basis.  After a year of mentoring, mentees show a decrease in disciple referrals and an increase in both school attendance and academic achievement.  Help us match male students from TwoRiversMiddle School and HolmesJunior High School who are on a waiting list.  For more information please contact Amy Weber, Mentoring Outreach Coordinator at (859) 655-9545 ext. 6520 or amy.weber@covington.kyschools.us or visit

As we present

"Voices of Covington"

The NKU Theory & Practice of Oral History and Introduction to Public History classes, under the instruction of Dr. Rebecca Bailey, will present the cultural heritage tourism program "Voices of Covington".  This program serves as the prototype for "Discover Landmark Covington!" cultural heritage tourism program currently under development.

In 2007, the City of Covington received $130,000 from the National Park Service, Department of the Interior's Preserve America program to create a multidimensional cultural heritage tourism program entitled "Discover Landmark Covington!"

Dr. Bailey and NKU students joined the effort with the creation of "Faith and Foundations: Historic Eastside"-a prototype tour of Covington's Eastside neighborhood. The Eastside and "Voices of Covington" prototypes have been developed in partnership with Northern Kentucky University's "University-Community Partnership" service learning award, the Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement and NonProfit Development, and members of the NKU College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Learning Community & Instructional Design team.

Advice and guidance for the "Voices of Covington" project has been provided by the Center for Great Neighborhoods of Covington, the "Discover Landmark Covington!" Advisory Council, the Kentucky Historical Society, the Kentucky Oral History Commission, the Kentucky Folklife Community Scholars program, and the Kenton County Public Library.  Upon completion, "Discover Landmark Covington!" will have benefitted from the donation of over a quarter million dollars worth of volunteer time and cost share contribution.

Please join us in celebrating the successful completion of this phase of a project that demonstrates what a Kentucky community can achieve when its resources are marshaled in the name of civic pride!

For more information, and/or to rsvp contact Dr. Rebecca Bailey, public history coordinator at baileyr4@nku.edu (572-5176).
