Code Enforcement Department

In March, the City's Code of Ordinances was amended to require all buildings to have a permanent heat source.  This change was made to help reduce the risk of fire in buildings occupied by residents or businesses.   Portable heat is still permitted as a supplement to furnaces, boilers, radiators, or other forms of permanent heat, but may not be used as a replacement for those systems.

REMINDER!  The deadline for compliance with the CO detector requirements is July 1, 2008 Last year the Commission passed a carbon monoxide ordinance which requires every residential rental property dwelling unit in the City to be equipped with an approved carbon monoxide detector.   Property owners must be in compliance by July 1st of this year.  For more information regarding the ordinance you can click here to visit the Code Enforcement Department page of the City website.

City of Covington Establishes Solid Waste Fee Rates

The City of Covington has established solid waste fees for the upcoming year, based on the contract that was awarded to Republic/CSI by the Covington City Commission on Feb. 21. The contract with CSI will provide for weekly trash removal, universal recycling, and toters for all residences and businesses located within the city.

The annual solid waste bills, which will go out later this month, will be $89.60 for each dwelling or commercial unit and $52.41 for those residences whose owners qualify for a property tax homestead exemption.

This amount is less than previously reported because, among other things, the number of properties in the city has increased by 705 units over the same number of properties on which last year's calculations were based and because a new contract will be implemented in the second half of the current fiscal year.

The City Commission considered competitive bids from three solid waste removal firms before selecting Republic/CSI as the lowest bid.  The increase in this year's annual fee primarily reflects inflationary increases, especially the increase in fuel cost, as well as the cost of leasing toters, which averages at about $2 a month.

Toters will be available in three different sizes: small, medium, and large. Last year, the Covington Neighborhood Collaborative recommended to the City Commission that it require toters for all residents in the city as part of a larger plan to reduce litter in the city.  Republic/CSI will replace toters at no cost if they become damaged or inoperable.  In addition, the company will provide separate recycling containers to those individuals who wish to recycle.

Even with this year's increase and the provision of toters, Covington still charges the lowest solid-waste fees in the region, a fee that is substantially less than fees charged by other Northern Kentucky cities.

For instance, in its neighboring cities of Taylor Mill and Park Hills, which provide weekly pick up with recycling but without toters, residents pay $155 and $145.08 annually, respectively.  Fort Mitchell, which has twice weekly pick up without toters, charges $189.60 annually while Newport, which has twice weekly pick up with toters, charges $142 annually.  Elsmere charges $148, FortWright charges $134.28, and Erlanger charges $130.68 on an annual basis.

Next year, Covington will change the method by which it sends waste fee bills, billing them in conjunction with its ad valorem taxes, which go out in the fall.

SPRING SAFETY TIPS FROM THE FIRE DEPARTMENT

Spring weather causes some of the most unstable atmospheric conditions of the year.  Dangerous thunderstorms and lightning roll through the

Ohio Valley on a regular basis so here are a few tips regarding storms, lightning, and flooding:

  • Before a thunderstorm, remove dead trees and clear branches from around your house, and secure loose outdoor objects such as patio furniture.
  • During a thunderstorm, stay inside, do not shower or bath, do not use a corded telephone except to call 911, unplug electronics and turn off your air conditioner.
  • If outside, move to low spot such as a ravine or valley-but stay aware of flash flooding conditions, never stand under a tall, isolated tree, on a hilltop, in an open field, or near open water.
  • If swimming or boating, get out of the water immediately and take shelter
  • If you feel your hair stand on end could mean that a lightning strike is imminent.  Make yourself into a small target-squat on the balls of your feet, place your hands over your ears and tuck your head between your knees.  Do not lie flat on the ground.
  • Stay tuned to radio and the TV for updates on severe weather
  • Flash flooding can occur without rain clouds or rain in the immediate area.
  • Never walk through water more than 6 inches deep
  • Do not drive through flooded areas.  If your vehicle stalls in water, exit it and move to higher ground
  • After severe weather, watch for down power lines.

The fire department responds to numerous calls related to severe weather each year.  By following the above safety tips, you can do a lot to better your chances in case of a true emergency.
