Cable Television Needs Assessment

As a part of the cable TV franchise renewal process, as prescribed by the Federal Cable Act and the FCC, The Telecommunications Board of Northern Kentucky (TBNK) will be conducting various interviews and public input meetings to determine the current and future cable-related needs of our member communities.

We would like to invite your organization to participate in an interview regarding our communities' future needs for approximately the next ten years, particularly including free cable to schools, High Definition TV, local NKY Public, Educational and Government Cable TV channels, distance learning, video and communications networks, free access to television studios and training, any new ideas, and leveraging broadband technology.

If you would like to participate, please call Mindi Manz at the TBNK, at 859-261-1300, to sign up for the group interview.  We are scheduling a meeting with community organizations on Thursday, February 14th at 9:00 a.m.at the Northern Kentucky Area Planning Commission (NKAPC.)   Typical attendees for these interviews, include representatives from IT staff, public relations, and other communications and technology staff.

The information obtained from the interviews will be important in helping shape the future cable television environment in the TBNK member communities for many years to come.  Consequently, your input will significantly assist us in working to develop the most advantageous environment to meet all of our future cable television needs.  As one of the most qualified resources to tell us how an enhanced telecommunications environment could help your specific community, your assistance in this endeavor is appreciated.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Needs Your Input!

Concerning the Study of Hands Pike (KY 1501) in Covington, Kentucky

Public Information Meeting

Thursday, February 7, 2008

5:00-7:00 p.m.

Taylor Mill Elementary School Cafeteria

5907 Taylor Mill Road, Covington, KY

Open Format (stop by anytime between 5 and 7 p.m.)

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is undertaking a planning study to develop and evaluate potential safety improvements for Hands Pike, KY 1501, in Covington, Kentucky.

The purpose of the public meeting is to present preliminary findings and gather input on potential issues, concerns, alternatives, and impacts for the proposed improvement project.

Following the meeting, improvement alternatives will be evaluated by the project team using the preliminary traffic, geometric, environmental, and geotechnical data gathered to-date as well as the input received from the local officials, local stakeholders, and the public. These preliminary improvement alternatives will be carried forward for more detailed analysis (including consideration of traffic, environmental, geotechnical, socioeconomic, cost and constructability) and further local official and stakeholder input. The result of this planning study will be a recommendation for the improvement of Hands Pike. The no-build option will be given equal consideration.

Handouts containing information about the project, comment sheets and displays will be available at the meeting. Representatives from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and their consultants will be available to answer questions. Written comments will be accepted during the meeting and until February 22, 2008 at the District Six Office address listed below.

The Hills Project logo

You're invited.

The NKAPC and UK's Landscape Architecture Department need your input to:

- identify the value of Kenton County's hillsides;
- explore ideas for future development;
- discuss desired forms for that development;
- identify methods for increasing quality of life; and
- form consensus on these and related issues.

NKAPC and
UK's Landscape Architecture Department are collaborating to conduct an in-depth study of hillsides in KentonCounty. You are invited to provide input for the project. The study entitled The Hills Project will be prepared by graduating landscape architecture students. Our goal is to provide both short- and long-term regional planning and development strategies by gathering public input, performing detailed site analyses, and conducting research. This project will hopefully bring a new awareness to the impact of hillside development and suggest ideas for improving aesthetics, functionality, and environmental quality. We encourage you to attend as many as three meetings at which time you will have the opportunity to provide direct feedback to the students concerning the ideas generated.

Meeting 1: Feb. 4, 6:30PM at NKAPC

Meeting 2: Mar. 19, 6:30PM at NKAPC
Meeting 3: Apr. 21,
6:30PM, TBA

The students will be assisted by Dr. Brian Lee, professor of landscape architecture, and NKAPC's long-range planning staff. Students will discuss planning and development issues with local design professionals, government officials, employees, and citizens to acquire an understanding of the area and to discuss potential ideas for future development.

We hope you can participate and help students develop recommendations and provide potentially useful ideas to increase the quality of life in KentonCounty. It is vitally important that participants understand that this is an open process and is meant to be an inclusive learning experience for students. We welcome people who are interested in contributing to the education of the students as well as providing ideas about the future of KentonCounty's hillsides.

Please join us at 6:30PM on February 4 at the NKAPC, 2332 Royal Drive in FortMitchell. We expect the presentation and activity will last no more than 90 minutes. If you cannot join us for the first meeting, please consider joining us at one of the later meetings. In addition, if you know someone who might like to participate, please feel free to forward this invitation.

With spring around the corner, you might be thinking about all those improvement projects that need to be done on your property. If you live in one of Covington's seven Historic Preservation Overlay Zones, remember that you will need to get a
Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) before you do any exterior work on your property. The Historic Preservation Overlay zones are: Downtown Commercial, Licking Riverside, Main Strasse, Mutter Gottes, Ohio Riverside, Pike Street, and Seminary Square.

Most work is issued a COA by staff; new construction, demolition, and work inconsistent with the Covington Design Guidelines must be heard before the Urban Design Review Board (UDRB).  The UDRB typically meets on the third Monday of each month at 4pm; completed applications must be submitted two weeks before the meeting date.

To see maps of the Historic Preservation overlay zones and to get more information on the COA process please click here to visit the Historic Preservation Office webpage.

Here are some helpful things to remember about keeping your residence warm for the rest of the cold season:

1.  Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to be sure they are working properly.

2.  Stoves are not made for heating homes.

3.  Supplemental heating devices should be used and maintained in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

4.  Keep combustibles clear from any source of heat.

5.  Do no leave heating devices unattended.

6.  If you are burning wood in your fireplace, make sure your chimneys are properly maintained -- your furnace, too.

7.  Candles are not efficient heating devices, but if used, do so in a fireproof container away from pets and children.  Don't leave burning candles unattended.

8.  Have an escape plan with a meeting place in case of any emergency at your residence.  If there is an emergency at your home, once you exit, do not return until a professional tells you it is safe to do so.

Stay warm, but stay safe.

 Homebuyer Assistance Program

Despite all the negative things that you may have heard about the real estate market, it is still a great time to buy a home in Covington!  There are many high quality properties in all price ranges available in all of our neighborhoods.  Mortgage interest rates are as low as they have been in years. Many local banks have incentives for purchasing in Covington.  The City of Covington Housing Development Department has plenty of funds remaining in our Homebuyer Assistance Program.  Homebuyer Assistance is a $5,000 interest free, deferred loan that can be used for downpayment and closing costs.  There are no payments on this loan for as long as you live in the home and the loan is forgiven if you live in the home for 15 years.  Eligible borrowers can use these funds to purchase homes anywhere in Covington.    We will be glad to help make homeownership a reality for you and your family. The Art of Food

Mural UnveilingFebruary 29 -

March 28, 2008

THE EXHIBITION

Ornate edible creations and sculpture were often created for celebrations in the cities and courts of early modern Europe.  The Art of Food, an upcoming Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center special exhibition of ephemeral art created out of food, pays homage to this past "tradition" and will feature food as more than a necessity; but a taste experience.

The Art of Food explores the ways in which food is a complete sensory experience through with creative interpretations from artists who use food as the inspiration for art. Today, the food industry is integrated in all aspects of pleasing the senses.  This unique four-week exhibition attracts the art and culinary masters of the area to create a collage of art, food and atmospheres.
