PPS Group will move in August 2008 from its downtown Cincinnati offices at 602 Main St., where it has been since 1981, to Covington's Ice House building at 424 Scott Blvd. The move will take about four months - with lots of electric lines and electronics - before the firm takes occupancy in August.
We wanted to stay in the near-downtown area, and Covington was getting quite interesting to be over there. There's a lot of nice restaurants and nice places over there, and things are happening. We are intrigued by the public square Covington hopes to develop across the street, in the block bounded by Fourth and Fifth streets, Madison Avenue and Scott Boulevard.
We are currently spread across three floors , and that is causing inefficiencies. To have everything now in one location is going to be great! We have signed a five-year-plus lease but have plans to stay much longer because of the cost of moving, which is estimated will be around $500,000, including the specialized air-conditioning and electrical systems that will be necessary for our equipment "We signed a lease, and we're going to move our facility there, so it's exciting days," said PPS CEO Bob Gerding.

Renaissance Covington
Want to Save Money on Gasoline? Start Peddling!
The Covington Public Works Department has just recently installed 43 new bicycle racks at various locations throughout the city. The bike racks, a project of Renaissance Covington, were purchased with donations and proceeds from the Biker's Unite fundraiser that was held at Deadwood Saloon last summer.
Commissioner Jerry Stricker helped to kick off the project by offering a $2,500 challenge grant to Renaissance Covington for the racks. The original goal was to raise the match, bringing the total to $5,000. They ended up with over $12,000.
This project was a direct result of community support and the need and desire for the racks.
Gasoline prices have spiked and now stand at or above $4 a gallon. AAA recently reported that it costs the average American more than $10,000 a year to own and maintain a car and this cost is increasing annually. Bicycling not only to save a few dollars on gasoline, but also because it helps the environment.
According to Reuters, U.S. cities that have long promoted bicycle use by commuters are now seeing a steady rise in the popularity of pedal power as gasoline prices soar. Unlike Europeans, Americans use bikes for transport sparingly, even though 40 percent of personal trips in the United States are two miles or less, according to bicycle advocates. But rates of bike use in some U.S. cities are significantly higher thanks to recognition by urban planners of the environmental, economic and health benefits.
Campaigns originally designed to cut down on traffic and pollution are now paying off for people looking for an option to driving with national gas prices averaging a record $4 per gallon.

Citizens Police Academy
Fall Session - Begins September 2
Applications now being accepted!
The Covington Police Citizen's Academy allows for diverse populations of adults throughout the city to come together for training and education on various police oriented topics. The purpose of our academy is to create understanding through education and to promote a positive relationship with our community. The Citizens Academy is a two way educational process. The participants are given training in many of the same areas as a recruit might experience but on a lesser scale. While citizens are learning about what police officers do on a daily basis, officers are learning how citizens feel about certain issues. In this way, both the police and the citizens benefit from the academy about certain issues. The Covington Police Citizen's Academy consists of a 11-week process that provides a wide variety of law related education. Instructors from the rank and file of our department help to make the classes enjoyable by providing hands-on activities in each class.
Participants will be exposed to every major facet of police training, including: · History of policing/department · Organizational structure of the department · Communications · Criminal Law/Justice system · Patrol and Traffic · Criminal Investigation · Hate crimes/Crime Lab · Firearms Training/K-9 · S.W.A.T. team/Bike & mounted patrol · Use of force · Community policing · Crime Prevention · Street drugs/crime suppression unit · Domestic violence/juvenile crime · Defensive tactics · Search and Seizure Students are also invited to participate in a ride along program, in which they are paired with an officer for the duration of a normal shift, wherein they can experience, first hand, what an officer's daily duties include. The only requirements for becoming a participant in the Covington Police Citizen's Academy are: participants MUST be at least 18 years of age and live and/or work in Covington.

Great Results for the Center for Great Neighborhoods 'Covington Quest'
Covington Quest, an urban adventure hosted by the Center, was part scavenger hunt, part race. The weather forecast on the morning of June 28th was iffy, but being an adventurous group, the 'Questers' went forth through light rain and then intense humidity, solving clues and conquering challenges, in hopes of major bragging rights and grand prizes. But weather conditions were the least of their worries, as some of the course challenges involved bobbing for (participants choice of) cooked pork kidney, chicken feet or gummy worm candy; throwing a tomahawk 40 feet to a wood target, and many more. The four-mile course was capped off by a five-legged race to the finish line that made for tough team coordination and lots of laughs.
30 teams started the Quest and 28 finished; 63 volunteers helped with the Quest and we're happy to say we didn't lose any.
The documentary of Covington Quest is set to air in August on cable Channel 15.
Many thanks to all who helped, the participants, the volunteers and the sponsors: Corporex, The City of Covington, Nielsen Company, St Elizabeth Medical Center, Cosmos & Summit Medical Group, and so many more. For a complete list of sponsors and more photos please see the website - www.covingtonquest.com.

Cincinnati Regional Transportation History Committee's new website at a
FREE family fun interactive event on Tuesday August 12, 2008 from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm. The goal of the Cincinnati Regional Transportation History Committee is to compile a comprehensive history of transportation in the region since 1788. Its purpose is to trace the important role of transportation in the settlement and development of Cincinnati and the surrounding area. The task has started with compilation of timelines for various forms of transportation. The CRTHC has been working in cooperation with the Behringer-Crawford Museum to bring an exciting and educational event to the public. The debut of the website will give families a chance to experience History in Motion through a series of interactive displays and artifacts. Visitors attending the event can witness the evolution of transportation in the greater Cincinnati area right before their eyes. Complementing the museum's permanent exhibits, Rivers, Roads, Rails and Runways, the displays provided by the Transportation History Committee will focus on aviation, canals, transit, railroads, riverboats, and roads. A Wright Flyer simulator as well as a Night Flier replica will be available to visitors. Canals can be explored through a series of audio visual experiences and visitors will be able to travel back in time while touring a historic TANK bus and cars. Artifacts from the B&O Railroad and the Cincinnati Museum Center as well as others will be showcased.
