Renaissance Covington
On Monday, April 7 the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented $600,000 in grant funds to the City of Covington at the former Donaldson Art Sign site, 2125 Donaldson Ave. The former Donaldson Art Sign property was selected by the EPA for an environmental clean-up award in the amount of $200,000. In October 2007, the city submitted three separate funding requests in the amount of $200,000 each.
The other two Covington awards for $200,000 each were for an EPA Community-Wide Hazardous Assessment Grant, and an EPA Community-Wide Petroleum Assessment Grant. Covington will use the grant funds to assess and remediate Brownfield sites in order to create market-ready sites for new businesses and development, revitalize the City's neighborhoods, and grow the local economy.
The EPA presented awards totaling $4.5 million at the ceremony and included communities in Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. Officials from the EPA offices in Washington, D.C., the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and officials and guests from each awarded community attended the ceremonies.

National Preservation Month ~ May 2008
The City of Covington will join thousands of individuals around the country as part of a nationwide celebration of 2008 National Preservation Month in May 2008. "This Place Matters" is the theme of the month-long celebration, which is sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Since the National Trust created Preservation Week in 1971 to spotlight grassroots preservation efforts in America, it has grown into an annual celebration observed by small towns and big cities with events ranging from architectural and historic tours and award ceremonies, to fundraising events, educational programs and heritage travel opportunities. Due to its overwhelming popularity, the National Trust has extended the celebration to the entire month of May and declared it Preservation Month to provide an even longer opportunity to celebrate the diverse and unique heritage of our country's cities and states and enable more Americans to become involved in the growing preservation movement. This year will mark the first official Preservation Month.
Here in Covington Preservation Month 2008 will be with our annual River Cities Preservation Awards, which will be held in conjunction with the City of Newport and the City of Bellevue. Grand Opening of the Artisans' Enterprise Center
A great celebration took place April 11th at the Grand Opening of the Artisans' Enterprise Center (AEC). The AEC was filled with artists and art enthusiasts. Senator Jack Westwood, an honored guest and speaker at the event, worked with State Representative Arnold Simpson to secure state funding for the build out of the Center. City officials and between 700 - 800 visitors took part in the festivities and to show support. Good art, good people, good food, good music and magic made for a great time for all in attendance. It was a beautiful night inside and out of the AEC. The enthusiasm and excitement of the evening still reverberate within the gallery. Please stop by anytime and visit!
The Artisans' Enterprise Center (AEC) is offering painting classes every Tuesday at the AEC. If you are interested in learning watercolor, acrylic, or oil painting, please call Kay Summe for more information @ 859-640-0484.

City of Covington Establishes Solid Waste Fee Rates
The City of Covington has established solid waste fees for the upcoming year, based on the contract that was awarded to Republic/CSI by the Covington City Commission on Feb. 21. The contract with CSI will provide for weekly trash removal, universal recycling, and toters for all residences and businesses located within the city.
The annual solid waste bills, which will go out later this month, will be $89.60 for each dwelling or commercial unit and $52.41 for those residences whose owners qualify for a property tax homestead exemption.
This amount is less than previously reported because, among other things, the number of properties in the city has increased by 705 units over the same number of properties on which last year's calculations were based and because a new contract will be implemented in the second half of the current fiscal year.
The City Commission considered competitive bids from three solid waste removal firms before selecting Republic/CSI as the lowest bid. The increase in this year's annual fee primarily reflects inflationary increases, especially the increase in fuel cost, as well as the cost of leasing toters, which averages at about $2 a month.
Toters will be available in three different sizes: small, medium, and large. Last year, the Covington Neighborhood Collaborative recommended to the City Commission that it require toters for all residents in the city as part of a larger plan to reduce litter in the city. Republic/CSI will replace toters at no cost if they become damaged or inoperable. In addition, the company will provide separate recycling containers to those individuals who wish to recycle.
Even with this year's increase and the provision of toters, Covington still charges the lowest solid-waste fees in the region, a fee that is substantially less than fees charged by other Northern Kentucky cities.
For instance, in its neighboring cities of Taylor Mill and Park Hills, which provide weekly pick up with recycling but without toters, residents pay $155 and $145.08 annually, respectively. Fort Mitchell, which has twice weekly pick up without toters, charges $189.60 annually while Newport, which has twice weekly pick up with toters, charges $142 annually. Elsmere charges $148, FortWright charges $134.28, and Erlanger charges $130.68 on an annual basis.
Next year, Covington will change the method by which it sends waste fee bills, billing them in conjunction with its ad valorem taxes, which go out in the fall.

The Covington Fire Department added 10 new firefighter recruits on April 14, 2008 - its first hirings in more than 18 months. The new recruits will go through a 10-week training academy conducted by Assistant Chief of Training Jeff Groneck, assisted by Emergency Medical Services Director Karl Chalk. Once recruit training is successfully completed, the new firefighters will go on shift, expected some time in late June.
Do you have, or do you know someone that has, what it takes to be firefighter? The number one quality it takes to be a good firefighter is a genuine desire to serve the public, and in our situation, the residents and visitors to the city of Covington. Firefighters are known for their courage, technical abilities, physical strength and much more, but many of those attributes are the natural outcome of wanting to serve the community in a special way.
Testing to become a Covington Firefighter will be July 12. To become a member of the department, a candidate must first complete this Civil Service test. Please click on this link to the City of Covington web page for further information, including minimum qualifications.

Citizen Satisfaction is Job 1 Thanks to all who participated in the Great American Clean-Up last Saturday. It was a huge success. This annual event continues to grow, and certainly did again this year - with nearly 200 more participants than last year! Orange shirts were everywhere across town, as we were joined by volunteers from our neighborhood associations, as well as organizations in and all around Covington. We hope everyone had a good time Cleaning Up Covington!
Thanks! |
