The Problem With Politics: Polarization This morning I read that Social Security is running out of money even more quickly than previously projected. I am concerned because I lack confidence in Congress to solve the problem. "Once upon a time", before the days of political purity, we had both conservative Democrats and moderate Republicans in Congress. They were able, when necessary, to be bridges for their parties and enable effective legislation to happen. Today it seems that moderates cannot pass their party's ideological "litmus-test" to be elected. The bridge builders, the party-moderates who acted to create consensus, are gone. Someone who is "pro-life" is about as unwelcome in the Democratic Party as someone who is "pro-choice" is unwelcome in the Republican Party. The result is gridlock. We have a do-nothing Congress because, in their minds, they can do nothing to achieve compromise if they want to be reelected. A definition of polarization is when you no longer see yourself in community; rather than seeking to complement, you seek to win. The right-wing Republicans want a right-wing nation, and the left-wing Democrats want a left-wing nation. Is there anyone left in the middle to hold us together? Please, join me in praying for this nation. And, if you are not registered to vote, you are shirking an important responsibility of being a citizen. In faith,

Pastor Tim

God of grace and God of glory
On thy people pour thy power;
Crown thine ancient church's story,
Bring her bud to glorious flower.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
For the facing of this hour
For the facing of this hour.
