How Did We Get Here?
It happened again this week. I was talking to someone who said that her friends are surprised that she is involved in the church. Surprised because they see "the church" as reactionary: anti-intellectual, anti-gay, anti-women and arrogant (my way is the "only way"). When she tells them that her church is different, they smile. When she is insistent and argues that "we don't believe the Universe is less than 10,000 years old, and we aren't against anyone - not gays, not women, not people who think for themselves," they are suspicious.
Are there really faith communities that are places of love, acceptance, healing and transformation? There are thousands of such churches! It is more than sad that many people are experiencing something other than the Spirit of Christ.
Maybe we need a 12 Step Program for Recovering Christians so people can really meet Jesus. Not the Jesus who is reactionary and fearful of modernity, but the Jesus of love and justice who bids us to follow. I want to tell folks about this Jesus!
In faith,

Pastor Tim

"When I ask my students at the beginning of each semester to write a short essay on their impression of Christianity, they consistently use five adjectives: Christians are literalistic, anti-intellectual, self-righteous, judgmental, and bigoted."

New Member Orientation, February 12
If you are interested in becoming a member of Faith Presbyterian Church, you are invited to sign up for the Membership Orientation Luncheon at Noon on February 12 in Faith Center. You may also be interested in becoming an affiliate member. This membership category was created for those who are active members of a church "up north," but spend part of their winter here in Southwest Florida. These individuals choose to "affiliate" with us by becoming an active part of Faith. Please see Janice Hiner, Director of Congregational Life, for additional information at Janice@fpcfl.org or call the church office at 239-542-2858.
