A Sad Tale From Penn State
The first church that I served out of seminary was near State College, Pennsylvania. I spent several fall Saturdays watching Penn State play football. Other times on my day off, I would browse their book store. Joe Paterno was near the top of my "most admired list" - after all, how many football coaches use their wealth to build libraries and mental health facilities? Today, however, Joe lives with the heartache of what has happened on his beloved campus and, true to being a man of character, conceded that his was a lapse of judgment. "It is one of the great sorrows of my life," he said. "I wish I had done more."
Do the other sixteen adults who "knew" or "witnessed" this abuse of children without reporting it to authorities also feel remorse?
The question is, "Why?" Why do we feel such a need to protect the institution and its reputation at the peril of children? Why?
Christmas is near. We are reminded that God-incarnate came to earth as one of these innocents. Pure, vulnerable, and defenseless. I remind you that each week we have several hundred children and youth on our church campus. As we treat them, we also treat Christ among us.
In faith,

Pastor Tim
