A NOTE FROM PASTOR TIM

The Skeptical Passionate Christian

One of my summer reads was Michael Duffy's The Skeptical Passionate Christian.  I appreciated his emphasis on passion; we need it. Yet passion, in our time, has unfortunately led us to 'certainty'.

Closing our minds to others. Thus, the need for a healthy dose of skepticism, not taking ourselves too seriously, being always open to the Holy Spirit.

One of the areas of healthy skepticism is Scripture. Too many people KNOW what Scripture says and their opinion is inerrant and infallible. He quotes Duke University theologian Stanley Hauer,  (Unleashing the Scriptures) who writes that the Bible should be taken "out of the hands of individuals in North America." While drastic, too many Christians use the Bible as a club to bludgeon their victims. Writes Duffy, "We should be reluctant to pick up the Bible, read a sentence or passage, and simply assume that we understand its meaning.... The Bible contains multiple voices, not just one. God did not write each word of it; it is not straightforwardly the words of God, though it may be taken, appropriately and metaphorically, as the Word of God."

I'll leave it to you to unpack that one!

FAITH PONDERING

"Christian faith is reliance upon a set of articulable, but frequently unarticulated and unconscious assumptions or convictions that, taken together, demonstrate the centrality of Jesus to a person's relationship with God and provide her or him with resources to live well in an uncertain world."

MISSION UPDATE

Moment of Generosity

A Story from Mission

Sunday, October 9, 2011

All of our hearts are touched by children in need. Last Spring, the Mission Committee adopted a grade school in need. The J. Collins Elementary in the North Cape is a Title One school. This means that 90% of the children are eligible for free lunch and breakfast programs. J. Collins requires uniforms, which many of the families can not afford.

Through the generosity of this Congregation, the Mission Committee was able to purchase 69 shirts (with the school logo) and 19 pairs of shoes. The shirts were distributed and the shoes are kept at the school. When Jody, the school coordinator, becomes aware of a child that needs shoes, she has the resources on hand to ensure that this child does not go shoeless. Your generosity has brought a sense of belonging and a smile to these young children. May God bless the children of this world.
