The Leopard
"If I lift up my eyes to the hills..."
(Psalm 121)
On my 'to do list' is to preach a sermon series on the Mountains of the Bible. It would include sermons on Ararat (Noah and the ark), Sinai (Moses), Carmel (Elijah), Gerizim (Joshua), Zion (David), Tabor (Transfiguration), Olives (site of Judas' betrayal), and of course, Calvary. It is hard to underestimate the importance of mountains to our faith tradition. People have seen faith as "ascent", as climbing the mountain of God to gain insight and understanding.
Here there is the story of another mountain told by Ernest Hemingway, (The Snows of Kilimanjaro). Kilimanjaro, he explains, is a snow-covered mountain that is 19,710 feet high, and is said to be the highest mountain in Africa. Its western summit is called by the Masai "Ngaje Ngai", the House of God. Close to the western summit, there is the dried and frozen carcass of a leopard. No one has explained what the leopard was seeking at that altitude.
In faith,
Pastor Tim
