A NOTE FROM PASTOR TIM

Christ and Christmas

By now, the slogan "keep Christ in Christmas" has grown faint. Predictably, next year we will again hear the same chant as people will protest the over-commercialization of Christmas. I find it interesting that the Puritans had a different viewpoint. They thought that Christmas was a pagan holiday, based on the winter solstice, that had little to do with Jesus Christ (who was born in the spring.) They protested the idea of putting "Christ in Christmas." They disapproved of Christmas celebrations as being but an excuse for "gross behavior, social upheaval, and drunkenness, no doubt aided by the lull in agricultural life."

The Puritans ordered shops to stay open and banned holiday cakes and candles. In Massachusetts, from 1659-1681, the legislature declared Christmas illegal. Even Congress remained in session on Christmas Day from 1789-1851, now there's an idea!

As you do your "Christmas recap", what do you think? How does a Christian keep one's focus on God rather than mammon during this time of year?
