Shall the Fundamentalists Win?
The "main line" churches (Episcopalian, Methodist, Disciples, Lutheran, United Church of Christ, and Presbyterian) seem to have fallen silent about one of the most important issues of our day - America's deepening slide into Biblical idolatry. The heart of the issue: Is the Bible given "under the guidance of the Holy Spirit ... nevertheless the words of men, conditioned by the language, thought forms, and literally fashions of the places and times at which they were written...and so reflect the views of life, history, and the cosmos which were then current"? Or, are we to believe, that the Bible is God-breathed, with every word inerrant and infallible? If you assume the latter, than you assume that culture has been forever frozen in time - frozen to first century norms when the New Testament was written and when the culture had very different views of women, slavery, gender, creation, science, male dominance, and justice.
How we understand the Bible - as a human product inspired by God, and with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit completely trustworthy or as a divine product that must be accepted in its totality - impacts the way we live. May God do "business with your soul."
In faith,

Pastor Tim

"The Scriptures, given under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, are nevertheless the words of men, conditioned by the language, thought forms, and literary fashions of the places and times at which they were written. They reflect views of life, history, and the cosmos which were then current. The church, therefore, has an obligation to approach Scriptures with literary and historical understanding. As God has spoken his word in diverse cultural situations, the church is confident that he will continue to speak through the Scriptures in a changing world and in every form of human culture."
