SBNR
SBNR is the acronym for spiritual but not religious. SBNR is a common lament these days: "I don't attend church because I am not religious, I am spiritual". Last week I read a retort by Will Willimon, Methodist bishop in Alabama, who asks the right question: "Where the heck do you get the idea that Christianity gave a rip about either religion or spirituality"?
All too briefly --religion has to do with rules; it is our projection of how God should order life. As Jesus explained, you can be deeply religious, follow all the rules, and not have a clue about love. Spirituality is a private consolation that many people seek in order to feel good, to have peace about themselves and their place in the Universe. And what does this have to do with following Jesus? Karl Barth called this "privatization of God" the equivalent of turning God into a commodity. Or, to again quote Willimon, "Spirituality enables us to be the first generation of Christians in history who cannot get hurt by following Jesus."
SBNR allow us to stay in control. Following Jesus is to deny oneself for the sake of the Kingdom of God. As we approach the season of Lent, let us be on the way of Jesus - not on the way as marked by our culture.
May God keep us faithful,

Pastor Tim

" So you say that you are spiritual? Any specific flesh or muscle on that spirit whom you worship? Can your "faith" in God endure the test of obedience to a First Century Jew who lived briefly, and died violently, and returned unexpectedly? Are you able to love God without despising those who God loves? If not, why bother." William Willimon, "Spiritual but Not Religious" Journal to Preachers, Lent, 2012
