A NOTE FROM PASTOR TIM

Dangerous Unselfishness

In studying for this past Sunday's sermon on the Parable of the Good Samaritan, I learned that this Parable was the text for Martin Luther King, Jr.' s final sermon that fateful night in Memphis. King said that we needed to develop a kind of "dangerous unselfishness." The first question you should ask when you walk down the Jericho road is not, "If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?" King implored, the question we must ask is, "If I do not help this man, what will happen to him?"

How tempting it is to measure my response to others by what it means to my own security, safety, and well being. How faithful it would be to see others as my fellow human beings.

When people told Dr. King that it was too dangerous to get involved with the Memphis garbage workers, his response was "If I don't stop to help the garbage workers, what will happen to them, and ultimately, what will happen to me?"

FAITH PONDERING

If I can help somebody, as I pass along. If I can cheer somebody, with a word or song. If I can show somebody, how they're traveling wrong. Then, my living shall not be in vain. Then, my living shall not be in vain.

Old Gospel song, "If I can Help Somebody"
