School's Student Managed Investment Fund Takes a Look at Ryder

Ryder's Robert Sanchez, BSEE '87, met in March with a group of 30 undergraduate and graduate business students in the School's Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF). The presentation is among many the students hear to determine what stocks to buy, sell and hold in real investment portfolios that they manage.

CNBC - March 29, 2016 - A segment during the "Closing Bell" program about the difficulty in putting a value on a firm's intangible assets included a live interview with Andy Leone, professor of accounting, who noted that after acquiring Volvo, Ford "had to write off $2.4 billion in goodwill because they overestimated the values of these intangibles." Chicago Tribune - March 29, 2016 - An article about the NFL Personal Finance Boot Camp taught by the School's finance professors noted that Chicago Bears safety Antrel Rolle, outside linebacker Lamarr Houston and cornerback Kyle Fuller would be among the 28 current and former NFL players participating in the program. Article

Entorno Inteligente - March 29, 2016 - The Spanish-language news site in Puerto Rico featured an article on the MBA World Summit hosted by the School. Article

Miami Herald - March 29, 2016 - An article about in growing number of "narrow" healthcare insurance plans which include fewer hospitals and doctors for covered care included insight from Steve Ullmann, chair and professor of health sector management and policy, who noted that "consumers are being required to make decisions" about where they receive care in order to ensure they are covered under these plans. Article

Miami Herald - March 21, 2016 - An article about the School's annual health care impact conference, "The Business of Health Care: Going Global," included quotes from keynote speaker Julio Frenk, president of the University of Miami, who noted that health is now "a global security issue." Article
 
South Florida Business Journal - March 21, 2016 - An article headlined "5 lessons from UM Business of Health Care Conference" included insights from the keynote speaker and panel sessions at the School's annual health care impact conference, "The Business of Health Care: Going Global." Article
 
Associated Press - March 19, 2016 - An article about the brand impact of SeaWorld's decision to phase out its killer whale program included insight from Arun Sharma, professor of marketing, who noted that in order to be successful, the company "will have to create experiences that differentiate themselves, as Universal does with Harry Potter or Disney does with Star Wars." GlobeSt.com - March 8, 2016 - An article in the national real estate industry trade publication outlined insights shared by Jon Gray, global head of real estate for the Blackstone Group, which he shared during "the University of Miami's fifth annual Real Estate Impact Conference," which was co-housed by the School of Business. Article
 
Discovery News - March 4, 2016 - The Discovery Channel news site published an article about research by Raphael Boleslavsky, an assistant professor of economics, which found that today's longer political campaign cycles, are causing the rise of extremist politicians. The article included quotes from Boleslavsky, who noted that "our research shows real impact associated with longer, more informative campaigns, and perhaps a reason why we are seeing candidates like Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders doing so well within their parties this late in the game." Articles about the research also appeared on at least 12 other research, psychology and other news websites. Article
 
WTVJ-TV (ABC Miami) - March 4, 2016 - A television station featured a segment about the casting call for the ABC-TV Shark Tank program, which was held the School of Business. The segment included comments from Susan Alvarez-Diaz, director of the School's entrepreneurship programs, who noted that when "the casting directors come out, what it offers [entrepreneurs] is the opportunity to get a sense of what's expected of them going forward." Florida Trend - March 1, 2016 - The magazine's annual MBA issue featured two articles on the School's MBA programs including The Miami Executive MBA for the Americas and Executive MBA for the Artists and Athletes programs. One article featured quotes from student Heidi Chumley who noted that she has "classmates from Venezuela, Brazil, Mexico, and the Bahamas [who] bring unique perspectives."
