Thirty University of Miami alumni and student teams pitched their entrepreneurial concepts at a casting call for "Shark Tank," the critically acclaimed business-theme TV series airing on ABC and in syndication on CNBC.

In Times of Crisis, Small Investors Can Move Markets Due to Emotional Trading Says Finance Department Study
In the wake of a market-wide crisis, such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks, trading by retail investors can move markets opposite to the trading by institutions. That is among the findings of a new study from the School's finance department.

Implications of Consumption-Income Sensitivity on Portfolio Decisions Among Topics Explored at School's Behavioral Finance Conference
Rather than taking into account and hedging for future income variations, as traditional models predict, households use their current income as a license to spend money, and this governs their investment decisions. That was a key finding of research by three members of the School's finance faculty presented at the fifth annual Miami Behavioral Finance Conference.

The FCPA Blog - January 13, 2015 - Anita Cava, professor of business law, co-authored an article about the University of Miami's Compliance Boot Camp, and the use of compliance to protect stakeholders from misuse by money launderers and terrorist financing. Article

 

Miami Herald - January 12, 2015 - An article that revealed that nearly half of South Florida hospitals are below CDC standards on infections included insight from Steve Ullmann, director of the School's programs in health sector management and policy, who called the penalties against these hospitals "significant." Article


South Florida Business Journal - January 7, 2015 - An article featured information about the ABC Television show Shark Tank coming to the School to hear auditions from entrepreneurs. The article included tips from Susy Alvarez-Diaz, director of the School's entrepreneurship programs, who advised "Know your numbers inside and out." The article also included quotes from Omar Soliman, an alumnus of the School, who appeared on the show during the first season. Article

Miami Herald - January 7, 2015 - The newspaper's "Starting Gate" blog noted that the School would be hosted auditions for the ABC Television show Shark Tank. The article also mention that past entrepreneurs on the show have included School of Business alumni, who as students competed in the annual Business Plan Competition hosted by the School. Article

WLRN Radio - January 6, 2015 - A segment about the U.S. opening relations with Cuba included insight from Steve Ullmann, director of the School's programs in health sector management and policy, who noted that normalization could prompt more physicians and other health care workers, who earn very little in Cuba, to move to the U.S. and help alleviate "the nursing shortage and perhaps and part of the primary care shortage that we are going to be experiencing." Listen (at 35:00)

CBS MoneyWatch - December 19, 2014 - An article about the impact that Sony's decision to pull the film "The Interview" from distribution included quotes from Claudia Townsend, an assistant professor of  marketing, who noted that "In the long run it's not going to taint Sony, because it's easy to blame someone else. The fact that the U.S. government is responding suggests that this is bigger than Sony." Article

Commercial Observer - December 17, 2014 - An article about what normalized relations with Cuba would mean for the real estate industry included insight from Luis Locay, an associate professor of economics, who noted that "investing in Cuba has to be a joint venture with the government." Article

 

Fox News Latina - December 12, 2014 - An article about a new report that shows Hispanic households account for a large portion of the country's overall spending power included insight from Arun Sharma, a professor of marketing, who noted that for many business the challenge is now to "reach and get in touch with them." Article

 

The Atlantic - December 9, 2014 - An article about the growth or art in cities across the U.S. included quotes, first published in the New York Times, from Arun Sharma, a professor of marketing, who commented on how Art Basel has changed Miami. Article

 

Miami Herald - December 5, 2014 - An article about a report that found that more than 80 percent of Floridians who signed up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act can buy coverage for $100 or less in monthly premiums after receiving tax credits, included quotes from Steve Ullmann, director of the School's programs in health sector management and policy. Article

Wall Street Journal - December 4, 2014 - An article about MBA admissions deadlines listed the School and its final deadline among those for Northwestern, Stanford, Dartmouth, Harvard, Indiana, Columbia, Yale and Cornell. Article

New York Times - December 4, 2014 - An article about how Art Basel has changed Miami included quotes from Arun Sharma, professor of marketing, who noted that "High-end art buyers come and buy art and leave, but they leave behind the environment for culture to flourish." Article
