School of Business Awards $30,000 in Annual Business Plan Competition

New ventures including a boat shoe seller, a health care provider and a social entrepreneurship program built around a café have taken top honors in the University of Miami's 2013 Business Plan Competition, which featured $30,000 in prizes.

A team of UM student entrepreneurs including a School of Business senior is among 76 teams vying for $1 million in start-up funding to launch their social ventures as part of the Clinton Global Initiative.
Pig Roast and Cake Cap Off School's Entrepreneurship Consulting Program
Roasted pig and a U-shaped cake were on the menu in April as entrepreneurship students marked the conclusion of a semester-long consulting experience with 11 local small business.

Sun-Sentinel - April 28, 2013 - The School of Business and its MBA programs were featured in a special MBA section in a number of articles including those on the value of the MBA degree, how applicants can stand out, specialized MBA programs, and experiential learning programs. The articles included quotes from Dean Anderson and Vice Dean Anuj Mehrotra. Two of the School's MBA alumni who are members of the School's Board of Overseers, Brian Rice and Michael Misiorski, were also profiled in the special section.

 

Big Data Republic - April 24, 2013 - In a regular blog post, Robert Plant, associate professor of computer information systems, wrote about the proposed federal legislation - the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) - and the discussion it has prompted about privacy issues. Article


Sun-Sentinel - April 21, 2013 - Steve Ullmann, director of the School's programs in health sector management and policy, was quoted in an article about health care workers in Florida pushing the state legislature to accept the Medicaid expansion program offered through the Affordable Care Act. Article


The article was also published by the Huffington Post.

The Miami Herald - April 20, 2013 - The newspaper's "Starting Gate" blog featured a lengthy article about the winners of the 2013 Business Plan Competition, hosted by the School. The article included quotes from Susana Alvarez, interim director of the School's entrepreneurship programs. Article


Associated Press - April 18, 2013 - Arun Sharma, a professor of marketing, was quoted in an article that revealed that big rum companies, in an effort to appeal to the mass market, do not focus on marketing their product based on where it is produced. Sharma noted that "the brand is more important than where it is produced." Article

Big Data Republic - April 17, 2013 - In a blog post, Robert Plant, associate professor of computer information systems, noted that the IRS, because of its access to information, has one of the most extensive data collections in the world and as a result, the U.S. "government is at the forefront of the big data revolution." Article

The Miami Herald - April 8, 2013 - Steve Ullmann, director of the School's programs in health sector management and policy, was quoted in an article about accountable care organizations (ACOs) which are pushed in the Affordable Care Act as a way to improve quality and lower costs for Medicare patients. Article

South Florida Sun-Sentinel - April 3, 2013 - An article about the economic impact of expanding Medicaid in Florida including insight from Steven Ullmann, director of the School's Center for Health Sector Management Policy who noted that the expansion would enable health care providers to hire more workers who could spend more money and boost the economy. Article
