ACC RAC Conferences - March 20-12, 2014 - Orlando, Florida

Papers Presented at the 2013 Conference and Accepted for the 2014 Conference

ACC RAC Conference 2014 The ACC RAC conference is one of the most prestigious chiropractic research conferences regularly attended by college presidents, research and technique chairs, and many other influential doctors and practitioners affecting the future of chiropractic and healthcare. Since SOTO-USA's inception in 1999 we have attended every conference and had a paper accepted at every ACC RAC conference possible.

This year we will be presenting 4 papers at the 2014 ACC RAC Conference:
  1. SOT chiropractic and acupuncture for SLAP tear: A case report.
    Christine Benner, Charles Blum

  2. Orofacial myofunctional therapy: A Case Report.
    Joy Moeller, Charles Blum

  3. Chiropractic Intervention of Zenker's Diverticulum: A case report.
    William Boro

  4. The influence of chiropractic treatment in patients the insulin resistance associated with diabetes type II: A case series.
Fabio dal Bello, Patricia Bergesch, Charles Blum

At the 2014 ACC RAC Conference SOT will be represented in a specific workshop entitled, "The Interface between Clinical Practice and Clinical Research in Chiropractic Technique: Bridging the Gap between Knowledge Transfer and Knowledge Utilization."

Presenters at last year's Technique Workshop were quick to point out that a series of case studies does not an 'evidence-base' make, while some presenters took great pride in championing a technique system approach they favor, while still other presenters bemoaned the profession itself for tolerating fringe practices. These kinds of presentations do little to advance the profession forward.

This Workshop starts from a different premise altogether. Let us assume that some technique system procedures are found to be clinically effective, some are found to be inert, and the research evidence for the usefulness of the vast majority of the other procedures is found to be inconclusive. This begs two questions: (i) So what? And more importantly (ii) "Now What"?

Presenters at this workshop will be:

Brian Gleberzon, DC, MHSc
Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College

Charles L. Blum, DC
Sacro Occipital Technique Organization - USA

Christopher Roecker, DC
Palmer College of Chiropractic-Davenport

Deed Harrison, DC
Chiropractic Biophysics

Scott Cuthbert, DC
International College of Applied Kinesiology - USA

David Sikorski, DC
Southern California University of Health Sciences

For the past March 2013 ACC RAC Conference we had five papers accepted:

  1. The correlation of the arm-fossa test with other sacroiliac findings: a feasibility study.
Robert Cooperstein, Charles Blum, Elaine Cooperstein

  2. Chiropractic and dentistry- the need for mutual understanding of TMD co-treatment: a case report.
    Charles Blum, Rebecca Griffiths

  3. Treatment of low back pain in pregnancy with sacro occipital technique (SOT): a case report.
    Aimee Carroll, Charles Blum

  4. Pregnancy, sacroiliac joint laxity, and the SOT category two pelvic distortion: a case series.
    Rodney Shelley, Charles Blum

  5. Sitting disc technique and the relationship to the straight leg raise: a retrospective case series of thirty patients.
    Harvey Getzoff

North American Brain Injury Society (NABIS) Conference

 26th Annual NABIS Conference, New Orleans, Louisiana, September 18 - 21, 2013.

Traumatic Brain Injury We are proud to announce that this year Ryan Pollard shared an oral presentation of his paper at the NABIS interdisciplinary conference.

Pollard R, Blum CL. Chiropractic Care and Its Effects on A Patient with a Moderate Traumatic Brain Injury. Reference 0046. North American Brain Injury Society's 11th Annual Conference on Brain Injury. September 18-21, 2013. New Orleans, Louisiana.

The focus of the paper was the effectiveness of SOT chiropractic care on a patient with a moderate traumatic brain injury and the importance of "supportive care" with these types of patients.

The essence of supportive care, is that while not expected to "cure the patient" this care supports a patient's activities of daily living, prevents worsening of symptoms and asymmetry, and continually works toward the possibility of improvement.

World Congress LBPP This program is held every three years. All the disciplines involved in the treatment and research of musculoskeletal disorders around the globe come together in a very stimulating meeting related to musculoskeletal disorders. Once again SOTO-USA was an endorsing member of this conference, offering our members registration discounts and builds prestige for SOT.

Thanks to Dr. Christine Benner SOTO-USA was represented at this conference. With her MS in human anatomy as well as being a certified SOT/Cranial practitioner and acupuncturist, her eclectic background put our profession in high esteem. She presented the following six papers:

Benner CD, Blum CL. CMRT and acupuncture in the treatment of dysmenorrhea (oligomenorhea) and low back pain: A case report.

Cranial State of Mind

Does cranial osteopathy influence the patient's state of consciousness?

Cranial Therapy Those of us who have had the blessing to have cranial care or ability to treat patients with cranial methods have commonly noted its positive affect on our mood or that of our patients. Engel Raimund attempted to see if these changes could be measured and performed a study [n=46].

His conclusion was that "applied cranial technique induced an altered state of consciousness (ASC) associated with positive affect in the subjects." "The results seem to back osteopathy's claim of being a holistic approach and bear several implications for patient handling while and after an osteopathic treatment." Sacro Occipital Technique Organization - USA is a 501c3 non-profit, professional organization formed to promote the awareness, understanding and utilization of the Sacro Occipital Technique method of chiropractic as founded and developed by Dr. Major Bertrand DeJarnette.

The SOTO-USA family all looks forward to seeing you May 15-17, 2014, for the 2014 Clinical Symposium in Redondo Beach, California. It will be a great opportunity to learn the essence of SOT or advance your SOT training with integrative classes in SOT, CMRT, and Cranial.

For those interested in working with the dental profession treating TMD then this symposium is light years ahead of anything else available. We will be sharing our 3rd in a four-part TMJ Chiropractic Certification Course at this seminar (all parts can be attended individually) and will also introduce nasal ballooning techniques integrated into SOT care.

The "Sacro Occipital Technique" mark is owned by SOTO-USA. The "SOT" mark is owned by SORSI and SOTO-USA is licensed to use the trademark.
