William Boro, Fabio Dal Bello, Rex Eaton, Rod Floyd, Glenn Frieder, Marilyn Holbeck, Anne Jensen, Brian Mouch, Vincent Perri, Henry Pollard, Anthony Rosner, David Rozeboom, Albert Salem, Jonathan Smith, Jean Thompson, Stephanie Willis, and Pamela Woodward.

Please consider submitting to next year's 6th Annual SOT Research Conference, click here for information.

The following are the papers in this year's 5th Annual SOT Research Conference. These papers are listed on the wikichiro site, to be published in the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research, the MANTIS and ChiroIndex.org search engines, and on the SOTO-USA website. Copies of the conference proceedings will be sent to all chiropractic college libraries in the USA.

North American Brain Injury Society (NABIS) Conference

Traumatic Brain Injury This year Ryan Pollard will share an oral presentation of his paper at the NABIS interdicsipliinary conference.

Pollard R, Blum CL. Chiropractic Care and Its Effects on A Patient with a Moderate Traumatic Brain Injury. Reference 0046. North American Brain Injury Society's 11th Annual Conference on Brain Injury. September 18-21, 2013. New Orleans, Louisiana.

The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of chiropractic care on a patient with a moderate traumatic brain injury.

The patient received sacro occipital technique (SOT), specific cranial work and blocking via category two specifications. The patient was also stretched and given exercises to perform at home. Treatment of his temporomandibular joint disorder was part of the care rendered.

Chiropractic supportive care has as its focus supporting his activities of daily living, preventing worsening of his symptoms and asymmetry, and continually working toward the possibility of improvement.

Does postural sway change in association with manual therapeutic interventions? A review of the literature.

 Ruhe A, Fejer R, Walker B. Chiropr Man Therap. 2013 Feb 4;21(1):9.

Body Sway This study concluded that "there is no conclusive scientific evidence that manual therapeutic interventions may exhibit any immediate or long-term effect on center of pressure excursions. Any changes in sway may be attributable to decreases in pain intensity. "

What are the implications of this study for SOT and how we view body sway in category one and two? Is the sway we find and affect with our care more associated with pain and positional preference?

A hypothesis to explain the palpatory experience and therapeutic claims in the practice of osteopathy in the cranial field.

Hamm D. Journal of Osteopathic Medicine. 2011 ;14:149-165.

Cranial This paper presents some hypotheses explaining the therapeutic claims made by osteopaths in the cranial field. It is suggested compression applied to the collagen matrix causes a state change. This is attributed to the thixotropic properties of collagen and biochemical changes. The biomechanical changes may account for the tissue change felt by osteopathic and SOT chiropractic cranial practitioners.

National Council for Osteopathic Research. Cranial Osteopathy

A snapshot summary statement. (May 2013).

Cranial Therapy Evidence summary from published peer reviewed systematic reviews.

Key messages:

Research findings suggest some small beneficial effects on clinical outcomes from this intervention in some patient populations.

Studies conducted to date have been more commonly pilot in nature, and larger studies with increased methodological quality will need to be conducted to provide more definitive evidence.

Only one study involving the treatment of patients with traumatic brain syndrome noted some adverse effects of the treatment.

Further research is required to build more knowledge about this area of practice.
