PMI Educational Foundation Liaison Newsletter

7 September 2012
Greetings!

It seems like just last week we were planning for the 2011 PMI® Global Congress and Leadership Institute Meeting. It's hard to believe these events are next month already!

While time has moved quickly, we're very excited about the growth of the Liaison program over the past 12 months. This time last year, there were 85 PMI Communities with PMIEF Liaisons. This year, we have 135! We're so happy to have you on the team.

There will be many opportunities to speak with you and hear about what you are doing at PMI's upcoming events in Vancouver.  We would also appreciate suggestions on how we can better support you and your PMI community!

Project Management Skills for LifeSM
Around the world, project management professors and PMI volunteers are integrating PMI Educational Foundation (PMIEF)'s resources into university and college curricula and programs.

PMIEF has developed resources that contain rich project management content that include introductory project management materials, career information and 21st century skills development such as presentation and leadership skills.

Professors are finding that these resources work for short, introductory classes or can be used as project modules for classes that do not have a "project management only" focus.

These resources, which can be downloaded at no-cost for non-commercial use at www.pmief.org, are helping educators introduce project management concepts to students through engaging exercises and easy-to-understand models.

Some examples of the resources' application in university settings include:

  • In Sao Paulo, Brazil a professor is using Project Management Skills for LifeSM to train his education students with a focus on service-learning
  • A project management professor in Central Iowa, USA is using Careers in Project
    Careers in Project Management
    Management
to introduce her students to the wide
array of career opportunities available to project managers
  • In Lebanon, a PMI member conducted a short project management session during a college competition using Project Management Skills for LifeSM
  • A volunteer in Chennai, India is conducting weekend courses in project management for highly-motivated students using Project Management Skills for LifeSM
  • In North Carolina, USA an international development teacher used PM Methodologyfor Post-Disaster Reconstruction to introduce his students to PMI's formal methodology

Using PMIEF materials, these educators and volunteers are sharing their professional talent with university and college students, helping build the workforce, and giving students skills they will use throughout their personal and professional lives. Project Management Nonprofit Practicum Moved to Different Site

Practicum Cover

The Nonprofit Practicum, a 12-hour seminar for nonprofits that demononstrates how organizations can apply project management to fit their specific needs, has been moved to the Millersville University Nonprofit Resource Network's (NRN) website.

About a year ago, PMIEF funded the creation of the Practicum through a grant to NRN.  PMIEF agreed to post the Practicum on its website for one year and then have NRN post it on its site beginning August 2012.

For the next five years, until August 2017, PMI members will still have free access to the resource. Other users will be charged US$250.00.

The practicum includes an instructor PowerPoint® presentation with notes and a student workbook that has been contextulized for nonprofits and has proven to be a valuable tool, making it easy to teach nonprofits how to use project managment to increase their efficiency and effectiveness.
