SOS Dunes News is sent to members of our email list. Normally, it is published once a month and covers current events effecting the dunes along Lake Michigan within Michigan. From time to time some items about other environmental issues or subjects that our readers may find interesting are included. A brief description of contents is included for recent issues.

  • June 21, 2011 - Invasive species  (6/21/2011)
  • PTD is having an open meeting at Sarett Nature Center on Invasive Species.

  • February 2011 - Attorney General moves for reconsideration  (2/25/2011)
  • Attorney General Schuette filed for reconsideration in the Anglers case within days of taking office and in less than two weeks later the Michigan Supreme Court heard arguments regarding the motion and agreed to reconsider. Update on Jean Klock Park.

  • January 2011 - Anglers case to be reconsidered?  (1/20/2011)
  • Attorney General announces intention to have Anglers case reconsidered. New website up and running. Harbor Shores oral arguments to be held on January 21.

  • December 31 2010 - Special issue.  (12/31/2010)
  • Reporting Michigan Supreme Court opinion in the Anglers of the AuSable v. MDEQ case.

  • November 2010 - Wind Farms Regs & Amicus Brief  (11/18/2010)
  • The legislature is poised to enact controls on offshore wind farms that may impact views of Lake Michigan and have economic effects. A group of environmental organizations filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court in the lawsuit to halt conversion of Jean Klock Park into a private golf course.

  • PTD filed an amicus brief in the Anglers of the auSable v. MDEQ case before the Supreme Court referencing reconsideration of PTD v. MDEQ.
    MDNRE to form citizen advisory councils.

  • Fund raising at the Outsiders Outside annual show. Dogs in Hagar Shore on the beach.

  • July 2010 - Hagar Extends Permit  (7/29/2010)
  • Hagar extended mining at the Nadeau Site for two years plus another 18 months for "reclamation" activities.
    PTD board and officers elected.

  • June 2010 - Nadeau Site in Hagar is back in the news.   (6/23/2010)
  • Nadeau site is in the news. First, the Michigan Supreme Court will consider briefs regarding the correctness of its decision in PTD v. DEQ. The Hagar Township mining permit expires July 1. TechniSand is asking for more time.

    Lyme Grass, an invasive exotic plant, is appearing up and down Lake Michigan beaches. Over time it will take over from American Beach Grass.

  • Nadeau Site is approaching the end of its permits. The Supreme Court is prepared to reconsider its 2004 decision that has allowed the mining to resume at the sand dune mine.
