Deerlick Park Update
Plans readied for improvements

Friends of Deerlick Creek is a group of concerned citizens who value the Deerlick Creek area's history, recreational use and wildlife habitat. They are working with South Haven Township and the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy to ensure this unique, natural resource is protected, restored and enjoyed as a quiet public beach.

Acquiring the 2.1 acres surrounding Deerlick Creek along Lake Michigan has been a vast undertaking involving many individuals, businesses and organizations. Over $75,000 in donations and $45,000 in in-kind contributions have been pledged to complete the improvements. Another $30,000 is still needed.

Sand Dune Protection & Management Act
Everyone can help

Another year of construction has begun with the break in the weather. The Sand Dune Protection and Management Act (SDPMA) protects critical dunes  from activities that damage or destroy the dunes. The DEQ has always depended on citizens to report violations of the SDPMA. Now because of significant reductions of budget and staff, they are even more dependent on citizens.

You can see the status of current DEQ permits for the critical dunes areas at the DEQ website. Also, your local building inspector can tell you if a DEQ permit is in effect.

If you want to report a violation, call the DEQ office for the area in which the violation has occurred. See the map of geographic areas covered by each DEQ regional office.

The DEQ site has maps of the Critical Dune Areas organized by township within the state. These are helpful in determining if a property is located in the critical dunes, though it may be necessary to contact the DEQ to verify the exact extent of critical dunes.

If you want to report a violation to the DEQ anonymously, or have questions regarding permitting, you can email violations@sosdunes.org. Someone will respond by email. Or include a telephone number where you can be reached and someone will call you to follow-up. All communications will be confidential.
Demolition of Jean Klock Park Begins

Demolition of park begins

Work has begun on conversion of Jean Klock Park in Benton Harbor to the Harbor Shores Development. The golf course was planned to take over most of the city's beachfront park. Adjoining areas will be used for housing and related uses.

For a number of years, two local grass-roots organizations have fought to preserve the park: Friends of Jean Klock Park and Protect Jean Klock Park. Photos of current activities as well as a history of the efforts to preserve the park can be seen on these sites.

There are still two law suit or appeals pending. One filed in state court by two members of the Friends of Jean Klock Park seeks to defend the Klock deed and 2004 Consent Judgement. The other, filed in federal court filed by several citizens, challenges numerous and serious violations of federal environmental laws and regulations. This second lawsuit is covered today (March 20) in MichiganMessenger, an on-line independent news site.

Recently we received a newsletter from Protect JKP that describes the activities of the organization over the past year and the current situation.
Is It Possible to Build Near the Bluff - Safely?

Recently, Gaye Blind, a biologist and dune specialist, wrote in a letter to the editor of the Herald-Palladium about the difficulty, perhaps impossibility, of safely building near Lake Michigan on the dunes.

She discusses a number of the hazards and suggests some strategies for minimizing the dangers. Her conclusion is "My advice is don't build there and you are there now - hang on for the ride." To read the entire letter - click here.

SOS Dunes News is planning a series of articles on design considerations when building in the dunes. They will each focus on a single issue and offer suggestions that are environmentally and ecologically friendly.
