Why come?
Come celebrate recent successes and future challenges for sand dune and coastal protection in southwest Michigan.  Recent successes include the protection of North Point Conservation Area near Van Buren State Park and Deerlick Creek.  With the work of several people coming together, these two properties are on track to soon be protected and kept available for public use and access to Lake Michigan.  Of course, continuing challenges need to be addressed.  These challenges include the fight to save other dune properties, such as Jean Klock Park in Benton Harbor and the Dennison property in Saugatuck.  Other continuing challenges include educating future generations about dune ecosystems and their importance to wildlife, our culture and economy and working with local governments to balance development with the protection of the dune ecosystem.  Preserve the Dunes is committed to both of these challenges now and in the future.  Please support our efforts and join us for this great event!

Here are some details to get you excited about coming:

1.  The band will be an acoustic, old time string band called Hawks and Owls.  They are very excited to do this event for us because they believe it is a great cause to support.

2.  The location - Fenn Valley Winery is incredible.  It is in picturesque fruit country - rolling hills of vineyards and orchards!  If you have not been there - you need to check it out!  Fenn Valley has been very generous in letting us use their beautiful facility for this event.

3.  Get GREAT information - we have asked several organizations to join us and provide information about their efforts to protect dunes.  So far we have commitments from Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy, Sarett Nature Center and the Allegan Conservation District, Friends of Deerlick and Friends of North Point.  Learn what these partner groups are doing to protect sand dunes and other special places in southwest Michigan.

4.  Get GREAT deals - we have several auction items that will be up for bidding. Plus Coloma artist, Randy Hingdon will be there showcasing his paintings of the dunes and shoreline.   You will get great deals while all the proceeds go to further PTD's efforts to increase awareness and protection efforts for southwest Michigan's sand dunes. Don't forget to bring cash or a checkbook to make purchases!

5.  The food and drinks will be WONDERFUL!!!  Here is the menu we have planned:

  • Pork Tenderloin Canapés- cherry -ginger marinated pork grilled and served on whole wheat baguette slices with goat cheese spread, cherry-ginger salsa and greens
  • Bruschetta Bar with tomato basil relish, hummus and feta cheese
  • Fruit, cheese and crackers (the cheese is being donated by Old Europe Cheese Company in Benton Harbor)
  • Crudite Basket with herbed crème fraiche
  • Chocolate dipped strawberries & Assorted fresh baked cookies
  • Strawberry Limeade
  • PLUS Fenn Valley wines will be paired with the food and available to everyone of age!

YOU and YOUR FRIENDS will not want to miss this event.  Let's get excited about sand dunes and the Lake Michigan coast!  Hope to see you on Saturday, July 19!
