13. Chiropractic and Personal Injury Email Library: This is a collection of emails sent to members of ACS and personal injury attorneys from 2008-2012. We are now making our archives of emails available. The subject line of the email has been reprinted in this document click here;as it appeared in the original email. The Index is intended to make it easy for you to go to the emails on the subject(s) of interest to you. ACS will supply these emails to ACS members (others call to inquire) if you send an email request to ACS@AZChiropractors.org.
Click here or on the title above for a new page with more detailed information. You will learn what happens when a chiropractor is the first contact provider compared to an MD for low back pain in a typical health insurance plan, in this case the Tennessee Blue Cross Blue Shield plan. Costs for care were 40% less when the chiropractor was the first contact provider.
You will also learn what happens when chiropractic care is added to a large health plan like AHCCCS. This has been thoroughly researched and here is the answer: Reduced surgeries, hospitalizations, MRIs, x-rays and overall back care costs. We have the evidence.
What happens when chiropractors become primary care physician (PCP) gatekeepers? This has been thoroughly researched with results published in peer-reviewed medical literature which we have posted.
Chiropractic treatment has been studied scientifically at great length resulting in publication of recent peer-reviewed journal articles. The results are reviewed on our separate page.
The alternative treatments for typical neck and back pain are NSAIDs (Advil, Motrin, aspirin) and opiates (Lorcet, Vicodin, Oxycontin, etc.). Chiropractic is much safer than these alternatives and so should be tried first. http://www.azchiropractors.org/pages/DANGERS-OF-NSAIDS-AND-OPIATE-PAIN-MEDICATIONS.php
Is chiropractic effective for any non-neuromusculoskeletal conditions such as asthma or fibromyalgia? We report the scientific evidence.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the AMA engaged in an active conspiracy to boycott chiropractic and "contain and eliminate" the entire profession. In 1987, the AMA was issued a Permanent Injunction Order in an effort to ban any further efforts to destroy the chiropractic profession. Read a newspaper article about how the boycott continues and must stop.

2. Gross Overutilization of Spinal Injections and Surgery
Click here or on the title above to open a new page with excerpts from the invaluable highly referenced 2009 online medical journal article "Overtreating Chronic Back Pain: Time to Back Off?" The authors include Richard A. Deyo, MD, MPH; Sohail K. Mirza, MD, MPH; Judith A. Turner, PhD; Brook I. Martin, MPH. The link to the full article is http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/58695.This study documents gross overutilization of invasive, highly expensive epidural injections and spinal surgeries. In most cases, inexpensive and relatively safe chiropractic procedures would make far more sense.
On the new page you will also find a special investigative article on back surgery by Harvard Medical School Professor and writer for The New Yorker, Jerome Groopman, M.D., from April 8, 2002 entitled "A Knife in the Back." This article is a must-read for those wishing to understand the overutilization of back surgery.

Clicking here or on the title above will open a new page with peer-reviewed journal articles, in depth reports from the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, George Lundberg, M.D., former editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association, David Servan-Schreiber, an M.D. and a PhD, and many more reliable and authoritative sources.
Everything you read will point you in one direction: You do have some control over whether or not you will get cancer based on your lifestyle choices. Furthermore, if you have cancer, you can influence the course of the disease by the lifestyle choices you make. We have assembled a unique assortment of references for educational purposes. Just click here to go to the ACS Cancer Evidence-Based Scientific Resource Center.
5. Cardiovascular Disease: Evidence Based Scientific Resources
Senior medical authorities have now proven that most patients who receive coronary bypass surgery and angioplasty/stenting procedures could have solved their problems by changing their diet. Read the scientific evidence from institutions such as the Cleveland Clinic. The cost savings would be huge if diet were substituted as treatment for surgical cardiology in many cases. Click here to open the ACS Cardiovascular Disease Evidence-Based Scientific Resource Page.
6. Inflammation, Toxemia and Detoxification: Key to Understanding Health and Disease; Rheumatoid Arthritis: Its Roots and Solutions Found in Diet
Click here or on the title above to learn everything you ever wanted to know about inflammation, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbs and the wisdom of their use, toxemia and the role of toxins in the cause of disease, and the value of detoxification in the maintenance and restoration of health.
Inflammation is a natural part of the healing process that is turned on by the body when needed. Inflammatory diseases include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, neuritis, gastritis, sinusitis and every other disease with a name ending in "itis." It makes no sense to take anti-inflammatory drugs and herbs to stop this healing process. Learn the cause of inflammation by clicking here.
It has long been thought that toxins are at the root of many diseases, and that inflammation is turned on by the body to destroy the toxins. Detoxification to eliminate toxins may be the answer. Click here to learn all about the theory about toxemia as a central cause of disease, and the value of detoxification as a major solution.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a classic inflammatory disease. All of the above-described theories about inflammation, toxemia and detoxification have been scientifically tested with rheumatoid arthritis patients and the results have been published in scientific journals. Click here to read how rheumatoid arthritis can be managed without drugs if ingestion of certain toxins in foods is completely avoided. These studies proved the validity of the theory of toxemia as a major cause of inflammatory diseases.
By Alan M. Immerman, D.C.
Author's Introduction: This is a full book mainly addressing nutrition and detoxification which was published by Naturegraph Publishing in 1989. It is now out-of-print so I decided to post it full text on the Internet for free. I hope you find it helpful. Click here to read full book online in PDF format.

12. Natural Hygiene, Functional Medicine and Fasting Center: The Fundamentals of Health and Disease
Principles of Natural Hygiene: Learn the basic fundamentals of health and disease in this concise summary.
The Four Rules Of The Ancient Universal Healing System Called Natural Hygiene: These are the key rules that explain how the body functions.
Time For A Whole New Approach In Health Care Called Natural Hygiene: An overview of an entire system of thinking about what produces health, why we get sick, and how health can be restored, first introduced in the US in the mid-1800s.
Unified Theory of Health and Disease: Natural Hygiene holds that the same cause of disease results first in minor problems like colds and the flu, and then is responsible for escalation to inflammatory diseases and ultimately cancer. Finally, everything makes sense with this theory.
The True Healing Art -- Natural Hygiene v. Drug Medication -- Dr.Trall MD 1862: Dr. Trall, M.D. challenged conventional medical practice before an elite audience at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. in 1862. His powerful words are just as relevant today. This is a must-read speech with the key sections highlighted.
Modern Books And Authors That Follow The Natural Hygiene System: The methods employed today by doctors such as Dean Ornish, M.D. to reverse atherosclerosis are pure Natural Hygiene in nature. This system is simply true.
Nutritional Pharmacology versus Natural Hygiene 1981: This is a journal article by Dr. Immerman that contrasts the use of food as a drug versus a nutrient. It is vitally important to avoid being a nutritional pharmacologist and solely use food to nourish and not to drug the body.
The Cause of Colds, Sore Throats and Other Infectious Diseases: This is a cause you have never considered before, but which truly has merit to it. Consider this theory seriously.
Why You Lose Your Appetite When You Are Sick -- Vegetarian Times: There is a rational basis for appetite loss during sickness. It helps promote healing.
Protein -- How Much is Enough? Vegetarian Times: You need far less protein than the government says since their recommendations have been heavily influenced by the protein, i.e., meat and dairy, industries. Most Americans harm themselves by eating too much protein.
Skin Diseases -- A Nutritional Approach -- Vegetarian Times: The skin is the largest elimination organ in the body and thus can be heavily influenced by the diet.
Megavitamin Therapy -- The Reality -- Chiropractic Economics: Megavitamin therapy is really no different than drug therapy.

Immerman, Alan M. D.C. The Immerman Files. Dr. Alan Immerman collected every available scrap of published scientific evidence issued between 1880 and 1980 that supported fasting and Natural Hygiene/Nature Cure. He was the Director of Research for the American Natural Hygiene Society in the 1980s. This material (a seven foot tall stack of photocopies) was then scanned by Dr. Immerman. All these articles are available for free download, organized by topic. This link leads to a short essay by Dr. Immerman explaining how the files came to be and how to make the best use of them, and from there, to the files themselves.
Books
Immerman, Alan M., D.C. Health Unlimited. 1989. See chapter on fasting.
A very easy to understand summary and restatement of the basic hygienic viewpoint that would serve as an excellent introduction and guide to someone with insufficient time to study the fundamental books of the Founders (Tilden, Shelton, etc.) from which this book is drawn. It is vegetarian in outlook and disapproves of colon cleansing. Used by a chiropractic college in the United States as a basic text of diet and nutrition. The author, Alan Immerman, is in practice and may be reached at aimmerman1(at)cox.net. Downloads as a PDF of 514 kb. Placed on the World Wide Web with the permission of the author.
Fasting and Eating for Health: A Medical Doctor's Program for Conquering Disease
Precise diet and fasting programs to relieve headache, hypoglycemia, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, colitis, psoriasis, lupus, and uterine fibroids. Using fasting to lose weight How to start, what to expect, how to reintroduce food to maintain maximum benefits How to work with a physician for longer fasts (more than 3 days)
Shelton, Herbert M. The Hygienic System, Vol. III, Fasting and Sun Bathing. San Antonio, Texas: Dr. Shelton's Health School, Third Revised Edition, 1950. First Published 1934.
In his exhaustive study of therapeutic fasting, Shelton claimed: "In more than thirty years of conducting fasts, I have conducted over twenty-five thousand fasts, ranging in duration from three days to more than two months. I have conducted about six fasts that have gone sixty or more days, the longest being sixty-eight days. I have had literally hundreds of fasts that have lasted from forty to fifty and more days." Despite Shelton's possible overstatement of "twenty-five thousand," likely no one else has ever equaled his experience with fasting for the purpose of healing disease. PUBLIC DOMAIN.
Shelton, Herbert M. Natural Hygiene: Man's Pristine Way Of Life. San Antonio, Texas: Dr. Shelton's Health School, 1968.
This rather long polemic painstakingly, passionately and rather aggressively examines certain key concepts of Shelton's version of Natural Hygiene: no one who reads this book carefully will ever think of the words cure and medicine as being compatible with Hygiene or healing or health. There is also an excellent history of the development of the Hygienic movement. PUBLIC DOMAIN.
DeVries, Arnold. Therapeutic Fasting. Los Angeles: Chandler, 1963.
A complete, sensitive and intelligent survey of fasting and of fasting literature. Arnold DeVries was an American researcher, writer and hygienist, who already in the 1950's changed from a fruitarian (Fountain of Youth, 1946) to a paleolithic understanding of what constitutes optimum human nutrition (Primitive Man and His Food, 1952, Elixir of Life, 1952). Therapeutic Fasting, 1963) has been one of his most popular and widely used titles. Downloads as a single PDF of about 275 kb. Thanks are owed to Dr. Bass of the International Natural Hygiene Society for providing this excellent book. OUT OF PRINT
Goldstein, Jack. Triumph Over Disease by Fasting and Natural Diet. New York: Arco Publishing Company, 1977.
A personal testimonial in the vein of a true-confession story, only this story is not of love and betrayal, but of a young man who, through receiving much conventional medical treatment for ulcerative colitis, had been so damaged by the medicos that he approached death. In the nick of time he discovered natural hygiene, fasted for over 40 days and began to recover health and enjoyment of life. Gruesome in its detailed description of the disease and shocking in it's recounting of the brutal and constitution-destroying treatments he received, interesting in the detailed inner-experience of a long-time water faster. Downloads as a PDF of 633 kb. OUT OF PRINT.
Hazzard, Linda. B.,D. O. (1927 edition). Scientific Fasting: The Ancient and Modern Key to Health. New York: Grant Publications. This is taken from one of a series of editions going back many years before 1927.
One of the wisest books on natural medicine ever written, and written totally from decades of personal practice. Also contains a great deal of advice about handling children. PUBLIC DOMAIN
