Summer Professional Development for Educators 
Kupu Hou Academy: June 1-4    

Mid-Pacific Institute will host the 5th annual Kupu Hou Academy from June 1-4. The academy is designed to help teachers grow their deeper learning practices, specifically project-based learning. Academy leader Dr. Mark Hines and other veteran project designers from Mid-Pacific, SEEQS, Waialae Elementary PCS, and Malama Honua PCS will give teachers practical, hands-on strategies for building impactful student projects and assessments. Participants will return for follow-up sessions in October 2015 and March 2016. There will also be a drop-in day for administrators on June 3, which will include a roundtable discussion and opportunities to observe project development. Professional Development at Assets: June & July   

Assets School will host two professional development opportunities this summer. The Slingerland Multisensory Structured Language Approach Workshop is a 4-week comprehensive training based on the principles of Orton-Gillingham and multisensory instruction, and will run from June 4-July 2. The second workshop, on Multisensory Writing, will be held July 30 -31 from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. For more information and for the registration form, please click here. St. Andrew's Schools Summer Institute: June & July

  • Introduction to Blended Learning is designed for the teacher who has some experience engaging students online, but is interested in learning more about the concept, pedagogy, and good practice of successful blended courses. This course will take place from June 15-July 10 online and then in-person on July 22 and 23.
  • The Mindful Classroom: Cultivating Peace through Practicing Awareness will be held July 21 - 22. Learn the science behind mindfulness, cultivate your own personal practice, learn practical activities to implement in classroom or home and connect with like-minded peers. This seminar is free and will include both lecture sessions as well as interactive practice.

Professional Programs at Punahou: June & July

  • The Brain Symposium is designed for practicing educators, focusing on learning and the brain (June 8-9).
  • Lab School @ Punahou is a cohort-based program designed to explore topics around teaching and learning (July 6-9).
  • The Administrative Leadership Institute is designed for administrators and focuses specifically on the challenges of such roles (July 21-23).
  • The Global Education Teacher Strand gathers a cohort of educators for 4 days of learning, exploring and designing globally focused curriculum (July 27-30).
All of the programs involve teacher-to-teacher learning, where educators work with colleagues and strategic partners, including researchers and experts, to advance their own professional practice and benefit their students and their institutions. Institute for Thematic Instruction: June 22-July 2

Taught by Dr. Robert Peters, along with experienced classroom teachers from Hanahau`oli, the Summer Institute is a two-week seminar and practicum experience in the design of thematic units with an emphasis on engaging children in project-based learning. The Institute includes the development of a unit draft with outcomes, instructional strategies and assessment tools. It will also include observations, hearing first-hand from practitioners, opportunities to ask questions and explore the challenges and rewards of a thematic approach. Advanced Placement Summer Institute: July 20 - 23
HPU will be hosting a four-day intensive professional development opportunity for new and experienced AP teachers, coordinators, counselors and administrators. Educators will gather to discuss course-specific content, instructional strategies, course organization and methods for promoting greater student participation. Sessions are led by College Board-endorsed subject experts who will help equip new and experienced AP educators with effective resources and best practices. Register by June 1 to get the early bird registration fee. 2015 HAIS Annual Recognition Dinner  

Many, many thanks to all of our colleagues who helped make the HAIS Annual Recognition Dinner a truly memorable event. Mahalo to Saint Louis School's Hui O Nā 'Ōpio for their awe-inspiring performance that set the mood for the festivities that followed with the notable recognition of honorees by special friends and colleagues.

 

We extend our appreciation to Mark Sugimoto and Jim Scott for leading the singing of He Hawai`i Au - a first for the Annual Dinner and one of the highlights of the evening. We hope for a repeat performance next year!

 

This event would not have been possible without the support of the HAIS Board of Directors, staff and our speakers. Our gratitude to Elaine Nelson, Bob Peters, Katherine Richards, Jim Scott, Betty White, and J.P. Wilcox for their heartfelt acknowledgement of the accomplishments of our honorees and, mahalo nui loa to HAIS staff members Phil Bossert, Kendra Ozaki and Myrna Medeiros. Make a Lei for Memorial Day: May 22

The City and County of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking volunteers on Oahu to make a lei for the 50,000 graves of men and women who served our country. Fresh flower lei that are 22" in length can be dropped off at any City and County Fire Station on Friday May 22 from 8:00am-6:00pm.

First Annual Fatherhood Essay Contest: May 31

The Department of Human Services (DHS) State Commission on Fatherhood (SCF) invites all public, private, charter, and/or home-schooled high school students to submit entries to the First Annual Fatherhood Essay Contest.  Entries should focus on experiences that explore the complex relationships children have with their dads - biological dads, step dads, adoptive dads, and/or non-related father figures.  The Commission on Fatherhood is also sponsoring related contests for an SCF Logo and an SCF motto/slogan. Complete rules and entry forms are posted on the website. The entry deadline for both contests is May 31.

Next Wa'a Talks: May 21

The next Wa'a Talks will be held from 3:30 - 7:00 pm at Kailua Intermediate School. This event is free and open to public, charter, and independent school teachers and leaders interested in sharing mana'o or learning more about how to integrate the Worldwide Voyage and mālama honua into school communities. SOTF Conference PoL Opportunity: May 30     

The call for Student Presentations of Learning (PoL) proposals is open until May 30, for the Seventh Annual Schools of the Future Conference, convening November 3 - 4 at the Hawaii Convention Center. The PoL provides a table for up to 4 students and a teacher to demonstrate what they are learning in project-based learning (PBL) classes. Click here to view the SOTF Conference flier. Hawaii Science Bowl: January 30, 2016
Registration for the 2016 Hawaii Science Bowl will begin on October 1 at 12pm East Coast time, and the application deadline is November 20, 2015. Acceptance will be on a first come, first served basis.
