2015 High School Journalism Awards
Hawaii Baptist Academy's student journalists took home the top award, on April 22, in the annual Hawaii High School Journalism Awards competition.The independent school was named best in state, followed by Mililani High School and Kamehameha Schools Maui. Nine public schools and eight private schools statewide competed in 21 categories. In an initial round of judging, winners were awarded in each category, ranging from best news writing and feature writing to best layout and digital illustration. The winning public school entry and winning private school entry in each category were then judged to determine an overall state winner for each category. Hawaii Schools Score High at Robotics World Championships
Three of Hawaii's middle schools, including teams from Island Pacific Academy and Maui Preparatory Academy scored high in the recent Vex Robotics World Championships that took place in Kentucky. More than 12,000 teams from middle schools, high schools and universities from 29 countries competed over a two week period. In the middle school division only 105 teams qualified for the finals and three were from Hawaii. In the Robotic Operations/Driver Skills division Island Pacific Academy Navigator Robotics placed 2nd, Wailua Hawaiian Kids placed 16th and Maui Prep Team iPueo placed 21st. In the Robot Team Work Skills division Wailua Hawaiian Kids placed 3rd, Island Pacific Academy Navigator Robotics placed 19th and Maui Prep Team iPueo placed 33rd. In the Robot Programming Skills/Autonomous Mode division Wailua Hawaiian Kids placed 16th and Maui Prep Team iPueo placed 21st overall.

Food for Thought Event: May 5
The public is invited to reflect upon the health and sustainability of the ocean's ecosystems at a free Food for Thought event on Tuesday, May 5 from 5:30 - 9 pm. Co-hosted by Punahou School and Slow Food O'ahu, this event will feature a film screening and a panel discussion in Thurston Memorial Chapel on Punahou School's campus."Sushi: The Global Catch," a feature-length documentary on the popularity of fresh fish and the impact it has on the environment, will be shown as a precursor to a panel discussion by Laurie Carlson from Slow Food O'ahu, Jan Yoshioka and Jason Chow from Conservation International, and local chef Ed Kenney. Homeless Aware Poster Contest: June 1
The poster contest is open to all high school students on Oahu, with a $300 award going to the winning school. The first 50 students to submit a poster will receive a free ticket to the Arise Concert to End Homelessness in Chinatown, featuring Keola & Moana Beamer and the Makaha Sons. The poster should portray the struggles of those who are homeless and express why others should care for, and respect, those experiencing homelessness. CAPE Outlook: May Issue
The Council for American Private Education's (CAPE) newsletter, Outlook, is available for download. Highlights include articles about the abundance of new programs nation-wide, students falling short in history, same-sex marriage and the Supreme Court and the effects on private schools, and President Obama's reflection on the "undeniable power" of private school teachers.

Meet Education Author Bob Lenz: May 13
The education innovator and author Bob Lenz will be in Honolulu to celebrate his new book: Transforming Schools Using Project-based Deeper Learning, Common Core Standards, and Performance Assessment. The author reception and book-reading will take place at The Pacific Club, from 4:30 - 6:30 pm, where Bob will share stories from his successes with project-based learning in Hawaii and on the continent. His new book draws on examples from Envision Education schools to explain how project-based learning can blend with Common Core-aligned assessment for deeper learning. SOTF Conference PoL Opportunity: May 30
The call for Student Presentations of Learning (PoL) proposals is open until May 30, for the Seventh Annual Schools of the Future Conference, convening November 3 - 4 at the Hawaii Convention Center. The PoL provides a table for up to 4 students and a teacher to demonstrate what they are learning in project-based learning (PBL) classes. Click here to view the SOTF Conference flier. Kupu Hou Academy: June 1-4
Mid-Pacific Institute will host the 5th annual Kupu Hou Academy from June 1-4. The academy is designed to help teachers grow their deeper learning practices, specifically project-based learning. Academy leader Dr. Mark Hines and other veteran project designers from Mid-Pacific, SEEQS, Waialae Elementary PCS, and Malama Honua PCS will give teachers practical, hands-on strategies for building impactful student projects and assessments. Participants will return for follow-up sessions in October 2015 and March 2016. There will also be a drop-in day for administrators on June 3, which will include a roundtable discussion and opportunities to observe project development. Education Technology Conference: June 8-10
Kukulu Kaiaulu 2015: Building Global Communities, is an education technology conference sponsored by Kamehameha Schools' Information Technology Division. The cost is $165 per person, which includes breakfast and lunch. Also included is an "unconference," which is a participant-driven, discussion-based event filled with interesting conversations with like-minded people who want to connect and share. Institute for Thematic Instruction: June 22-July 2
Taught by Dr. Robert Peters, along with experienced classroom teachers from Hanahau`oli, the Summer Institute is a two-week seminar and practicum experience in the design of thematic units with an emphasis on engaging children in project-based learning. The Institute includes the development of a unit draft with outcomes, instructional strategies and assessment tools. It will also include observations, hearing first-hand from practitioners, opportunities to ask questions and explore the challenges and rewards of a thematic approach.
