25th Hawaii History Day State Fair: April 25
The Hawaii History Day State Fair, a competition which involves hundreds of students and teachers from around the state, will be held on Saturday, April 25, at Windward Community College from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. This year's state competition will feature over 300 students in grades 4 through 12. State competitors were identified from a pool of contestants at seven district fairs held throughout the state in February and March. Top qualifiers from the state fair will move on to the 2015 Kenneth E. Behring National History Day (NHD) contest, at the University of Maryland at College Park. Society of American Military Engineers Scholarship: June 5
The 2015 Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Honolulu Scholarship application is now available. This scholarship opportunity is open to high school seniors who will pursue a degree in engineering or architecture. The $6,000 merit-based 4-year scholarship is paid in 4 installments of $1,500 a year. The annual award is contingent upon the scholarship recipient maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA, continuing to study engineering or architecture throughout college, and eventually earning a Bachelor's degree in engineering or architecture.The application deadline is June 5, 2015 (postmarked). Hawaii Theatre Center Auditions
The Hawaii Theatre Center will hold auditions on June 8, July 20 and August 10 for its 2015-2016 Hawaii Theatre Young Actors Ensemble, a pre-professional acting program open to all Oahu high school students, grades 9-12. The auditions will be held onstage at the Hawaii Theatre, 1130 Bethel Street. Callbacks will be Monday, August 24, also onstage at Hawaii Theatre.
The Theatre also is scheduling interviews for the Technical Theatre Apprenticeship program for teens ages 13-19, and the Junior and Intermediate Ensembles for middle school students, ages 10-13. SOTF Conference PoL Opportunity: May 30
The call for Student Presentations of Learning (PoL) proposals is open until May 30, for the Seventh Annual Schools of the Future Conference, convening November 3 - 4 at the Hawaii Convention Center. The PoL provides a table for up to 4 students and a teacher to demonstrate what they are learning in project-based learning (PBL) classes. Click here to view the SOTF Conference flier. Hawaii State PE & Health Conference & Dare to Dance Workshop: May 2
The 2015 Hawaii Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (HAHPERD) Hawaii State PE & Health Conference will be held on May 2 from 8am-3:30pm, at the UH Manoa athletic complex. This year's theme is "Let's Move! With A.L.O.H.A. (A Lifetime Of Healthy Activity)." The event will also feature guests Jamie R. Sparks, the School Health and PE Director of the Kentucky DOE and nationally renowned dance instructor Christy Lane. Kupu Hou Academy: June 1-4
Mid-Pacific will host the 5th annual Kupu Hou Academy from June 1-4. The academy is designed to help teachers grow their deeper learning practices, specifically project-based learning. Academy leader Dr. Mark Hines and other veteran project designers from Mid-Pacific, SEEQS, Waialae Elementary PCS, and Malama Honua PCS will give teachers practical, hands-on strategies for building impactful student projects and assessments. Participants will return for follow-up sessions in October 2015 and March 2016. There will also be a drop-in day for administrators on June 3, which will include a roundtable discussion and opportunities to observe project development. Advanced Placement Summer Institute: July 20 - 23
HPU will be hosting a four-day intensive professional development opportunity for new and experienced AP teachers, coordinators, counselors and administrators. Educators will gather to discuss course-specific content, instructional strategies, course organization and methods for promoting greater student participation. Sessions are led by College Board-endorsed subject experts who will help equip new and experienced AP educators with effective resources and best practices.
