Governor Brown Blocks Bill to Limit Use of Biosmiliars in California
California Governor Jerry Brown has vetoed a bill that would have limited the use of biosimilar pharmaceuticals in the state. Governor Brown explained that the legislation was premature, as the FDA hasn't yet set the rules governing such drugs. Biosimilars are not called generics, as it's difficult to prove that they're exactly the same as the biologic original. The campaign to limit the use of biosimilars has been led by Amgen and Genentech. So far, 10 states have blocked such efforts this year, including Illinois and Texas .. Read more

Luncheon Keynote
SoCalBio is pleased to announce that Robert Ward, Vice President of Strategy & Alliances, New Opportunities at AstraZeneca, will keynote the November 6 SoCalBio Investor Conference
Mr Ward has extensive experience in expanding the commercial footprint of biologic and small molecule therapeutics to increase sales and product life-cycle.
At AstraZeneca, he leads the New Opportunities Innovative Medicine Group which develops disease area strategies (Orphan Drugs, Endocrinology), engages in drug development collaborations, and licensing. This includes collaborative research with Alcon, for ophthalmic discovery/development and an R&D collaboration with Galderma to develop new treatments for dermatological conditions including psoriasis, acne and atopic dermatitis.
Prior to AstraZeneca, Mr ward held various managerial and executive positions at established companies such as Bristol Myers Squibb, Pharmacia Pfizer and Schering Plough.
Mr. Ward will deliver a the luncheon keynote during the 15th Annual SoCalBio Investor Conference. He will focus on "effective partnering in the open innovation regime."

Files for $69 Million IPO
The Monrovia-based Xencor was founded in 1997 and is led by Chief Executive Bassil Dahiyat (photo right). It recorded $9 million in collaboration revenue for the 12 months ended June 30. Corporate partners include Amgen Inc., Pfizer Inc. and Boehringer Ingelheim. The company said net proceeds from the offering will pay for mid-stage clinical study for an autoimmune treatment and an early-stage study of an asthma therapy. Amgen has licensed an option to commercialize the autoimmune drug if trial results pan out ...
