Kythera's Stock Surges on News That Its Double Chin Drug Meets Goals
Company Has Market Cap. Above $700 Million

Shares of the Calabasas-based Kythera Biopharmaceuticals surged on Tuesday, Sep 17 after the company said a drug intended to treat double chins met its goals in two late-stage clinical studies. The company said last Monday that its ATX-101 injection reached its main and secondary goals in the trials. Kythera said the drug worked better than placebo a reducing fat in the submental area of the neck, which can create the appearance of a double chin. ATX-101 is intended to destroy fat cells while leaving other tissue largely unaffected. The company also said patients were happier after treatment with the drug than placebo.... Read more

BARDA Provides $4 Million to the Pasadena-Based BCN Biosciences to Study Acute Radiation Countermeasures
 The U.S. Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority recently announced a $4 million cooperative agreement with the Pasadena, California-based BCN Biosciences for proof-of-concept studies on radiation damage prevention. Under the terms of the two-year agreement, BCN and BARDA will examine how well a novel small molecule called Yel002 can protect DNA from damage after the body's cells are exposed to damaging levels of radiation. Active Life Scientific's Portable, Low-Coast, Early-Warning Test for Osteoporosis
 A handheld device for diagnosing the early signs of osteoporosis could be available for clinical use within five years. The technology is currently being refined and tested at the University of Southampton with support from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The original concept was invented at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
