UCLA Engineer and Bruins Football Fan Develops Polymer to Prevent Concussions

 

The UCLA-developed polymer is a special material that actually had its roots as a bonding agent for ships being built for the U.S. Navy. The polymer was shown to have the ability to withstand shocks from explosions, so UCLA Professor Vijay Gupta, who shares a fondness for American football, decided to test the material on explosive helmet-to-helmet hits. In tests that utilize a heavy weight dropped onto helmets both with and without the strip of polymer, Gupta observed that the material reduced the G-forces on a player's head by up to 25 percent.... The Monrovia-based STAAR announced it has hired Stephen P. Brown away from Bausch & Lomb Surgical to become its new chief financial officer. Brown replaces current CFO Deborah Andrews, who is stepping down one rung to become chief accounting officer. As the company explained in a statement: "As we complete the consolidation of our manufacturing facilities, and look forward to our opportunities for growth, it is the right time to add to the strength of our financial management team" ...
