Patenting Genes

In Mixed Decision,  Supreme Court Throws Up a Barrier Around Gene Patents

 

In a mixed decision, the Supreme Court has ruled that companies will not be allowed to obtain a patent on human genes. But companies like Myriad Genetics will be able to nail down patent protection on synthetic genes, or cDNA, which require human tinkering. "A naturally occurring DNA segment is a product of nature and not patent eligible merely because it has been isolated, but cDNA is patent eligible because it is not naturally occurring," wrote Justice Clarence Thomas in the unanimous decision .... Battelle's Report Stirs Debate Over the True Impact of the Genomics Revolution


Battelle did the report for a group called United for Medical Research, which has a mission of advocating for a bigger investment in the NIH. And Battelle says it could track $965 billion in economic impact from the genomics field--all linked to the thriving life sciences sector that has emerged in the wake of the Human Genome Project. "Between 1988 and 2012, the federal government's $14.5 billion investment in the field of genomics represents an expenditure of only $2 per year per U.S. resident, with an enormous economic and societal impact from that investment," said Martin Grueber, research leader, Battelle and co-author, "The Impact of Genomics on the U.S. Economy" ... Amgen and Cytokinetics announced that they are expanding their strategic collaboration to include Japan. This collaboration is about discovering and developing small molecule therapeutics that activate the cardiac muscle contractility for potential applications in the treatment of heart failure. Amgen Says Experimental Ovarian Cancer Drug Significantly Delayed Disease in Study

 

Amgen is studying its drug trebananib in combination with paclitaxel to treat recurring ovarian cancer. The National Cancer Institute expects 22,240 new cases and over 14,000 deaths in connection with ovarian cancer this year. Amgen's study of its drug showed patients generally lived 7.2 months without their disease progressing, compared with 5.4 months for patients not taking the drug ... Read more

The San Clemente, California-based ICU, which makes infusion therapy devices and has a market value of nearly $1 billion, is seeking second-round bids.
