Some tips to keep you from blocking your own
blessings and success!
Are you
that driver that does 30 in the fast lane, wont speed up or change lanes and
then wonders why people are driving by giving you the finger?
You can
tell a lot about people by how they drive-among other things. There's 'the
turtle' who is just as comfortable in the slow lane as a fly in molasses; 'the
lost', who will come to a crawl oblivious to the traffic behind him or her
because they're 'turned around'...there's 'the speed demon' who could care less
about mere mortals....and the plum rude idiot who refuses to signal when
cutting in front of you!
No, no road
rage at all!
On the road
of life, your practice-or lack thereof-of certain principles can keep you from
blocking yourself and others from success.
Here are
some rules of the road...(that should be adopted by the DMV:)....and you.
BE AWARE, of your surroundings, of what's
going on around you. Know your part, know your lane; don't change lanes if
you're not ready or comfortable. Don't jump to the fast lane before you're
ready, you'll quickly get the brights, signaling you to get back in the slow
lane until you've learned the rules of the road.
BE RESPECTFUL of others. If you are changing
lanes, signal to let the driver you're cutting in front of, know your intent.
And then thank them when they graciously allow you entry.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE you set out on the road. Don't be
'The Lost' and then drag everyone with you because you don't know where YOU'RE
going. If you are traveling into unfamiliar territory, 'mapquest' your journey.
Research the direction you want to go in BEFORE you head out.
ASK FOR HELP.
This saves you a lot of time, dignity and shows respect for others on the
journey with you. Don't speed ahead all of a sudden because you see someone
moving faster than you. Now you're just REACTING instead of CREATING and you
lose the essence of your purpose...because you're trying to keep up with
someone else.
BE CAREFUL. Brains, brawn and speed aren't
always the best route. FINESSE, BABY, FINESSE. By all means charge full speed
ahead, but be mindful of a fork in the road, a pothole or black ice. Always be
cautious, humble and not too sure or arrogant. Exercise discipline, humility
and in some cases, restraint...or you'll go off the deep end.
DON'T ASSUME ANYTHING. Just because you are an
'experienced' driver doesn't mean the rules don't apply anymore. You STILL
always look left, right and left again, before moving ahead.
KEEP IT MOVING! If you see an accident or a
pitfall-and you are not personally helping out on the scene-KEEP IT MOVING!!!
You don't have time to stop n' gawk...and neither do the 100s of people you're
holding up in traffic!!! There will be many distractions on the road of life,
some will be painful, irritating or pleasant. Either way, deal with your
emotions, affirm your resolves and keep your EYE ON THE PRIZE!!! A.

SHADES OF
DIVERSITY'S HAUTE NOIRE: 'HAUTE! HAUTE! HAUTE!!
ANIKA & Friends produced biggest fashion event
of the year!
Minneapolis-The
2nd Annual Shades of Diversity event was the biggest fashion event of the season! The 2-part event featured a
dinner and guest speaker, Dr. Cornel West at International Market Square Friday
June 6th. The event was packed to the rafters, as guests including Commissioner of
Minneapolis Parks & Rec Board, Mary Merrill Anderson, Dr. Verna Cornelia
Price, Dr. Robert Jones, Dr. Irma McClaurin, Prof. Mahmoud El-kati, and Rep.
Keith Ellison all came to celebrate the annual Juneteenth Celebration.
The follow-up
to the event was the sensational HAUTE NOIRE: A JOURNEY INTO EXCELLENCE
produced by ANIKA & Friends', ANIKA ROBBINS and Executive Produced by Andre
Sims of Inside Out, Inc. the producers of both events.
The tone
was set with a visual tribute to local Minnesota trailblazers in the arts &
entertainment, business & politics, education and health and more. Shortly
thereafter, the fashion show began with a splash with hot runway models and
more visual images of prominent global figures who've made history from Rosa
Parks to Diana Ross; from Mahatma Gandhi to Marcus Garvey in a moving tribute
of global historical pioneers.
Fashions
from Sorrayah Studios, The Ebony J Collection, K&G men's & women's
wear, The ONYX collection by ANIKA (yes, she designs too!) and our featured
designer, Bridget Odigwe of ATL who flew in to showcase her unique, sultry
designs.
The models
were HOT TO DEATH!! With Alisha Houston, rising star, who STOLE THE SHOW! Her
dramatic, energetic moves and grace in her lithe 6'1 frame were reminiscent of
The Ebony Fashion Fair shows of old....full of style, international grace and
HIGH DRAMA!!! She was definitely the crowd favorite, along with April Hankton
who represented for the REAL SISTAHS!
'Fabulous!'
says Community Businessman, Ezell Jones, also honored as a 'Rainmaker' in the
opening tribute. "It was absolutely amazing!"
"In all the
shows we've hosted this year, yours by far was the best says Epic
concert center owner. "It had so much energy, your models were amazing!" I was
thoroughly impressed!"
