Spring into action by living stress-free!

April is stress awareness (and reduction) month. It is also Irritable bowel and alcohol awareness month as well. I find these more than mere coincidences as they all relate to each other.

What's funny is I am writing this right after receiving some stressful news, so I practice my breathing, my 'processing' that I try desperately to practice to decrease my stress level. Further still is the fact that all of these 'awarenesses' occur in the month of April, the month of the ram, THE ARIES. Traditionally, known for our high-strung (highly motivated), high fo'lutin' (ambitous) Type A personalities! No coincidence at all!

Here's the connection: Stress typically causes people to consume alcohol (more than recommended). It also causes them to eat carbs and other sugars (alcohol is a sugar, fyi) which leads to Irritable bowel or 'leaky gut'. Stress also increases the production of cortisol which causes women in particular to gain weight..especially in the middle; your tummy.

Stress can also cause hair loss, depression, skin disorders, digestive disorders, sleep disruption, irritability and more.

Soooo, as much as I hate when people tell me to 'relax', 'it's not that big a deal' - or my personal favorite, 'get over it'...no, no: 'it is what it is' - ugggh! I'm afraid I'm going to say that to you, but in a way you can wrap your mind...and your body around.

1. Breathe!!!! Sounds simple enough. Sometimes we forget to breathe long, breathe deep diaphragmatic breathing. Breathe in through your nose and slowly release through your mouth. And picture yourself releasing the tension in your breath.

2. Put things in perspective. You are loved. Remember who you are.  And know that 'this too shall pass.' Own your part in a situation, make your peace with it, seek resolution, and sometimes agree to disagree and keep moving. And know that you...and they will get theirs....whatever that may be! Either way, forgive anyway....for your sake.

3. Practice good time and people management. Commit to what you can.

4. Exercise regularly. This keeps your mind sharp and reduces the length of your stress or depression

5. Drink water and sleep. Nothing can substitute these natural remedies. Some things are better in the morning

6. Talk to your stressor; AFTER you've had some time to reflect. Troubleshoot all possible scenarios. Including the fact that you may not work it out.

7. Talk to a trusted friend or your partner

8. Meditate and pray. Go to your zone.

9. Binge if you must, but balance that out with nutrients, fruits, veggies, a home-cooked meal.

10. RELAX! Visualize yourself as a cool, calm, collected person who deserves a life full of richness and happiness and pursue it rigorously!!

If all else fails, meet me on the beach April 4-7 in Miami, baby! A.
