Never Miss the Water til the Well Runs dry
Living with Appreciation & Gratitude
Our souls are like wells that run deep into the earth with a seemingly endless reservoir of resources at our disposal. Oil-rich countries seem to enjoy the benefits of a seemingly endless supply of oil; and yet the masses go without basic necessities. What would happen if the oil were to dry up and no other resources were cultivated? Here in America, we've never REALLY experienced what it might be like to go without. No really, you haven't.
I grew up in Nigeria and experienced abundance and poverty and learned words like 'austerity' & 'self-reliance' --these were the party lines of the times. I know what it's like to have to hunt for water, do homework by candlelight and live without simple American 'luxuries' like a snickers bar because it cost the equivalent of $5.
It's a common sight to see women hawking oranges on their head in the blazing African sun with a child wrapped on her back and 2 others at her side.
No social welfare, no financial aid, no public assistance, no nothing. Just do--or die.
I learned 3 things:
determination, gratitude & reverence.
Those that work with me, experience my determination--and it drains them! I don't take 'no' for an answer-from anyone. Some mistake that as stubborness or arrogance. When it's really that hunter spirit that won't stop searching for drinking water until we find it, because our lives depend on it.
Those that have had the pleasure of my love and friendship, experience my gratitude. I can never say 'thank you' enough, I could never stop giving tokens of my appreciation. It's who I am.
Those that have insight understand my value system and the importance of having reverence for life-ALL LIFE, love and gifts of words-which I actually value more than material things because words spoken in sincerity and love are healing and uplifting and can motivate a person to live.
If what you want is right and pure, pursue it without hesitation. Replenish what you use. If someone does a favor for you, teaches you something new or allowed you the benefit of their presence, their wisdom, show excessive gratitude--and then pass it on to someone else.
It's funny sometimes, how you can teach someone something and they give a begrudging 'Thank you'. There is no honor or love in that and you need to examine your spirit. Our society has become self-absorbed and 'grabby,' always eager to take and never thinking to put anything back in.
Have reverence for the wise ones, your parents, your friends, your mate, your coworkers--your mother. You only have one of each of those--and only for a little while--bless them with your love, your reverence and your gratitude! 'Cuz you don't know what you got til it's gone"! A.
