Did You Forget?
Honoring our past by creating a brighter future

'Y'all musta forgot'....lyrics from a boxer-turned-rapper; his name escapes me ( I guess I forgot!). But his song keeps popping in my head as he makes frantic pleas for people to remember who he is and all the titles he won. Everyone wants to feel like they made a difference.

JFK But, people do forget. They forget the things that really matter. People forget to say 'thank you' or 'excuse me'; they forget to signal when changing lanes. People have forgotten the sacrifices of the civil rights movement-the fact that it wasn't too long ago that we HAD TO HAVE a civil rights movement, people forget that women couldn't always vote, run companies, or play ball professionally.....

People forget that you could be put to death for reading, for translating the bible. Some forgot the Great Depression, the Nazi regime, the Jim Crow era...the oil crisis of '78; the fallen soldiers and wounded survivors; veterans receiving barely adequate health care and support are a testament to that.

We forgot how to treat each other. Women are catty with each other. Rosa Parks
Large businesses edge out small ones. People who've 'made it' or are in a position to help others, don't. They'll support the 'right' causes, the 'right' people...but not the person sitting right next to them....although the need is greater, the publicity is lesser.

We forget the sacrifices made by JFK, MLK or Rosa Parks. We are on the brink of real change in over 400 years and yet we allow the media, our fears, prejudices, pride and false sense of security or who we think we are to get in the way of what's real, what's right, what's LOVE.

We forgot how to talk with each other. In fact, let's all do that: let's talk. Let's share what we know, teach our children, and remind each other of the past and share ideas of CREATING a better future, A BETTER 'US'....before we forget.

The Lynx are on the Prowl!!
ANIKA & FRIENDS get the Ladies of the Lynx ready for their close-up

After months of courting the MN Lynx organization, I got a call while on my way in for a TV interview on Channel 3....in Chattanooga, TN requesting hair & makeup services for the players for their media day! Needless to say I was ecstatic!

Talk about a whirlwind weekend: Coming off the high of Unifest, Chattanooga, (despite missing my flight from ATL-and thus missing the El Debarge show that we sponsored), I got in at 1am and on court at Target Center with ANIKA & FRIENDS #8, April Peterson at 8am....bright-eyed (sort of)-and ready to play ball!

MN Lynx Candice Wiggins I think I broke a makeup record for 'most faces beat '(insider makeup artist slang) in a weekend!!

The Ladies were cool....even the ones that didn't want ANYTHING to do with makeup!! They  remind you of your sister or cousin; just down-to-earth, some comical, some reserved....but ALL-about the ball.

I was humbled by all the energy and beauty-and sheer determination-in one room. I couldn't help being energized by it. Especially when you think what it must've taken for them to get where they are now. Some of them have compelling stories; like Candice Wiggins, who's father himself a renowned athlete, died of AIDS when she was 4. I was requested to style her again for UNTIL THERE'S A CURE-a San Francisco-based AIDS foundation. Thoroughly impressed with her, they flew in just to shoot her for their campaign that will debut in magazines nationwide.

But really, all the women are interesting from Lindsay Harding, ChardeMN Lynx Anna Deforge Houston, Anna Deforge, Niky Anosike, Kristin Rasmussen, Nicolde Ohlde, etc. They all embody what we at ANIKA INTERNATIONAL COSMETICS believe in and that is female empowerment.  Sometimes, I am really discouraged by the disparaging comments people-even women-make about the WNBA and women athletes in general. When I was growing up there was no WNBA, but there were tons of talented female athletes. The thing I love about these women is they're not trying to be the NBA, they just wanna play ball, they want to live their passion. The WNBA has the potential to have the glitz and glamour of the NBA, but it takes devoted fans....and GIRL POWER to make that happen.

I treated my girlfriends to my first Lynx game for the season opener May 18th! Now mind you, I'm not a big sports fan by a long shot; I ran track in school, etc, but I am no enthusiast. However, seeing the ladies play sealed it for me. These girls are BAD (i.e. tha bomb!) I vowed to spread the word and be at as many games as possible. My girlfriend's daughter gets it. Her nosedive to catch a T-shirt proved it! She understands the value, she'll help spread the word: The MN Lynx are the BEST KEPT SECRET IN TOWN!

Unifest 2008
Multicultural Festival A Huge Success!

We didn't quite know what to expect in Chattanooga, TN. Nonetheless we went in eyes wide open and were pleasantly surprised!

Unifest 2008Everyone was warm and gracious and eager to accommodate; including the owner of 'BLUE ORLEANS' who arranged to have a chilled bottle of chardonnay waiting for me after the event...gotta love that Southern hospitality!

We stayed at the plush Chattanoogan Hotel & Spa resort, a well-appointed resort with room views overlooking the beautiful Tennessee hills...I'm sorry, MOUNTAINS!

The event, held at the Chattanooga Convention Center drew thousands from a 5 state region all the way from Birmingham, Memphis, Atlanta, Nashville, Arkansas, Missisissippi....and more.

As a sponsor for the event, we were glad to be in the room; the beauty pavillion featured  the infamous Chicago-based hair care manufacturer, Mikal Clay, Jcpenney Salon and other local and regional salon professionals...and of course, yours truly, ANIKAINTERNATIONAL COSMETICS!

Our beauty suite was packed round the clock! With no time for breaks, soUnifest 2008 many wanted the ANIKA INTERNATIONAL experience....and well, we had to oblige them! Our artists-April Johnson, (Friend # 9) Kelly & DeMara (Friends #10 & #11) had long lines from the time the doors opened until well past the event wrap up at 8pm!!

Unifest also featured a slew of local and national acts including R&B crooners, Bobby Valentino, LLoyd, Keke Wyatt, Day 26 and many others. But the fashion show, produced by ANIKA & Friends and hosted by NBC Ch. 3's, Donna L., was indeed a highlight! From the 'lil mamas'-ranging from age 3-5 to the cool young men and the diva-fied adults, the show was definitely a hit!

'We're so pleased with the success of Unifest...we're in talks now about a possible tour", says Larina Poe, event producer in collaboration with Deep End Entertainment, an Atlanta-based event production company.

I just miss the sweet-tasting cool mountain air....I hear property is pretty cheap down there.......A.
