Greetings!
Important.
In finalizing the logistics for transport of the larger instruments, percussion, and auxiliary equipment to Calgary...we've had to make a change in our rehearsal schedule.
The scheduled June 28th practice will now need to be on Tuesday, June 21, one week earlier.
Our instruments and equipment will need to be collected that night, June 21, for transport (more information below). Waiting till the original transport date, June 28, did not leave enough safety margin for arrival in Calgary...on time (and what a show THAT would be!). It has also been brought to our attention that quite a few Rounders were going to leave for Calgary early...and would miss the 28th as well. For these two reasons...we find it necessary to move our rehearsal FROM June 28th TO June 21st.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvienence this might cause you and hope you will be able to make the switch with us.
On that note...there are only a precious few Calgary rehearsals remaining. Some members have already missed one. We believe some of you have missed two and at this point feel you have missed too much to participate.
To put on a quality show...your participation at our last three rehearsal dates is critical, mandatory, and expected. Hardships and questions can be addressed to me.
Our remaining rehearsals, including the changed date, are on the band calendar. All remaining rehearsals are at Admiral Farragut Acadamy at 7PM.
Also in regard to the June 21st date...we will be having a dress rehearsal of sorts, without uniform, fo r any/all of your friends and family to "send us off." We will perform a complete performance ready run through at 8PM or so at Admiral Farragut. Rounders not going to Calgary will also be asked to join us that evening.
This will be a fantastic trip and performance. Thanks for all the hard work put in so far. See you at Admiral Farragut for our next rehearsal on Tuesday, May 31.
Best,
Bill

One of the issues we as a band must address as we travel into Canada is bringing our instruments into the country and back again. For those who are able to carry their instruments as carry on there is no issue because the luggage is traveling with you the owner. For those large instruments traveling separate from the owner there are procedures we must meet.
On the 'Rounder website http://secondtimearounders.org/calgary01.asp you will find a customs form that must be filled out. You will need three copies. One copy will be attached to the case or box the instrument is in. The second will be turned into the Band no later than at our May 31 rehearsal at Admiral Farragut, this copy will be used to produce a manifest for the container with the instrument on it that will be used by a freight forwarding company. The third will be for you to take with you to Calgary in case the form gets torn from your case or box.
Some of you have a on loan instrument from the 'Rounders that does not have a box or case, you will need to find a box or ca se for shipping, nothing can be loose or unmarked in the container. Fill out the form as if you were the owner.
Please be timely getting these forms filled out and returned to the Band. No instrument or equipment will go in the container without a form and being on the manifest. Any wind instruments the size of a trumpet or smaller should be checked as carry on. Instruments larger than a trumpet, percussion instrument or bells should be packaged and labeled for shipment. Auxiliary equipment will be boxed and labeled, please see Lisa Rice for your instructions.
On the 31st we will have a table set up to take your forms. If you would like you can e-mail me your form. Be sure to subject line Rounder Manifest.
Thanks for your help and prompt attention,
Joe Deal JLDEAL@aol.com

| It's all about Attitude, err, Altitude! | | |
We can't stress this enough. The beautiful city of Calgary is located at 1048 meters above sea-level (that's 3438 feet if you don't speak Canadian yet, eh?). Many points in Calgary are much higher!
At that elevation...the air is quite a bit thinner than in St. Petersburg and yes, YOU WILL notice a difference! Just the act of walking up stairs will feel different and labored to you...much less marching in the Stampede Parade. This is fact and you'll want to prepare for it now...before it's too late! What can you do? Walk! Walking, and a fair amount of it, is one of the best things you can do NOW to feel better acclimated when you step off the plane in July. Please don't underestimate the need to prepare! We don't want YOU dropping out on parade day. Here are a few other tips for preparing for and acclimating to elevation: Acclimating to Altitude
Tim Holly, one of the Trumpet Shepherds sent the following email to his section:
I just returned from a business trip to Salt Lake City, elevation 4500 feet, similar to Calgary. I was surprised when I was a little out of breath after walking up two flights of stairs.
I walk briskly several miles, several times a week and also work out a couple times a week, so think I am at least in average shape. So, a two mile parade, playing trumpet at 4500 feet could be aerobically challenging for us sea level folks.
Please keep this in mind and do all you can to get in the best possible shape before you leave. |
