Greetings!

Hope you enjoyed the "short" parade in those "frigid" conditions Saturday. Nice job band...and what a large, Billappreciative crowd! We can expect the same for the Tattoo in Dunedin Saturday. In past years, the stands have been full!

Here is the rundown for Saturday:

The buses leave at 4:00 PM SHARP from the Northwest corner of Tyrone Square Mall (near the tire store). Look for the other Rounders gathered and park accordingly!

Those of you driving should be at the Dunedin High School football field ready to march by 5:00 PM (see direction link at top of this E-Mail). We will have time for a BRIEF run through around 5:00 PM.

 no smoking or drinking

As a reminder...being a public school, Dunedin High does not allow ANY smoking or alcohol on the premises. It is important that all Rounders, out of respect, adhere to and honor these rules!

We WILL do the Thriller dance on the field that night in front thrillerof a stand-full of people!  Please practice the dance drill and come ready to morph into 400 Michael Jacksons!

Tagalongs should know there is a charge to get in to see the Tattoo and sit in the bleachers. We believe that to be around $10.00 per person.

We will be back on the buses after our performahootersnce and back to Tyrone Square Mall around 8:00 PM where the management of Hooters has made a generous donation to the band. We encourage all Rounders to join us at Hooters after the buses arrive!

Beyond Saturday, check your Rounders calendars and remember the April 19 BIG practice at Osceola High School auditorium. Great job on the first two events! Two down - three to go!!

See you Saturday!

What is a Tattoo Anyway??

The original meaning of military tattoo is a military drum performance, but nowadays it sometimes means army displays more generally.

It dates from the 17th century when the British Army was fighting in the Low Countries (Belgium and The Netherlands). tattooDrummers from the garrison were sent out into the towns at 21:30 hrs (9:30PM) each evening to inform the soldiers that it was time to return to barracks. The process was known as doe den tap toe (old-Dutch for "turn off the tap"), an instruction to innkeepers to stop serving beer and send the soldiers home for the night. The drummers continued to play until the curfew at 22:00 hrs (10:00PM). Tattoo, earlier tap-too and taptoo, are alterations of the Dutch words tap toe which have the same meaning.

Over the years, the process became more of a show and often included the playing of the first post at 21:30 hrs and the last post at 22:00. Bands and displays were included and shows were often conducted by floodlight or searchlight. Tattoos were commonplace in the late 19th century with most military and garrison towns putting on some kind of show or entertainment during the summer months. Between the First World War and the Second World War elaborate tattoos were held in many towns, with the largest in Aldershot.
