Public Broadcasting Becomes Public Media

The media world is undergoing revolutionary change. Digital technology is disrupting old paradigms and people consume content and use media in new ways.  Public broadcasting - NPR, PBS and the local stations - played a very special, essential role on the 20th century media landscape. What is the model for a successful 21st century public service media organization and is the "old" public broadcasting part of the new model?

Report on the November Program
Succeeding in this Great Recession, and beyond
What you need to know, whether acquiring, or seeking to be acquired

Nov.2010 lunch

l-r: moderator Blodwen Tarter with Dennis Wilcox, Karen Shevlin Mahoney and Beverly Butler.

Your success relies on finding the PR stars of tomorrow.  Beverly Butler, Dennis Wilcox & Karen Shevlin Mahoney told us how.  Plus how to fix the looming skills gaps that threaten both The Great Recession recovery - and the future value of the public relations profession. Blodwen Tarter set the pace.

We asked each to summarize their Major Messages, to benefit those unable to attend--

Corporate Perspective

by Beverly Butler, APR

VP Wells Fargo Bank

"The most important thing for anyone looking to have a PR career is strong writing skills: features, news releases, email pitches, and speeches. The core of what we do is communicate to people, so how can you be successful if you aren't able to put your thoughts creatively and articulately into words?  Being current on pop culture and emerging trends, reading a variety of blogs and newspapers, and engaging in social media are all important. Clients expect you to be able to tell them where their story can fit into the conversation, so it is imperative you keep on top of the current dialogue, be it on Facebook, Huffington Post, or Bill O'Reilly. You don't have to like it or agree with it to read it, but you can't have blind spots if you expect to be able to give your client 360-degree advice."

"(Butler suggests) writing coach Ann Wylie' workshops, tip sheets, and newsletter at click here as a source for learning and improving writing skills."

Agency perspective

Karen Shevlin Mahoney, MA

VP, Recruiting, Fleishman-Hillard, San Francisco

"Quality junior and mid-level talent continue to be difficult to source and hire, even with the current state of the economy.  In particular, it is challenging to find mid-level PR professionals who are both executional [can get things done] and can demonstrate true critical thinking."

"Stellar writing abilities are as-if not more-important for new hires, as well as the ability to think in a big picture, integrated way.  Given the rise of digital and social media, we need people who can write for a variety of audiences, and in a clear, sparkling, and compelling way."

"We need look beyond traditional PR agencies for talent.  While we will and should continue to find strong, successful candidates from PR agencies, we also need to consider candidates from other industries-marketing, advertising firms, and also corporate communications departments that are focusing on integrated communications."

"I think we need to be constantly out on blogs, to see what people are writing about, and also who's doing that writing-are these people we want to connect with?   Connect with me on LinkedInhttp://www.linkedin.com/in/karenmahoney"

Educator perspective

Dennis Wilcox, APR, PhD

Professor Emeritus of Public Relations

School of Journalism and Mass Communications

San Jose State University

"(1) There is no shortage of talent; the challenge is attracting the best and brightest to the field because they have other opportunities in related fields.   Today's job applicants want more than a pay check; they are want the opportunity to expand their expertise and have a reasonable expectation of advancement in the career."

"(2) The key to successful recruitment is not particularly asking your friends and relatives for referrals,  but actively recruiting on college campuses where there is a strong public relations emphasis in in the curriculum. Offering internships is a good way to "test-drive" a prospective employee."

"(3) Employers should realize that their undergraduate major is not a template for hiring today's graduates.  An Engllish major is fine, but why settle for this when you can get a college graduate who already knows the basic concepts and principles of public relations and even social media?    In today's curriculums, employers with liberal arts degrees should realize that PR and journalism majors still take 75 percent of their coursework in the liberal arts and humanities."

"(4) Employers always complain about applicants not doing their homework, but employers often fail to do their homework by (l) giving a writing test, (2) asking applicants to solve a problem, (3) asking for a grade transcript, or (4) directly contacting a professor for his/her evaluation of the applicant."

"Attracting talent is major problem.  Paul Holmes, a long-term PR pro and publisher of the Holmes Report, said, 'It seems obvious that the shortage of smart, well-educated people interested in PR as a career remains the biggest long-term obstacle to the continued growth of the profession.'"

IN THE KNOW: PRRT Members' Latest

From PRRT Member Sam Singer, some terrific job openings ...

The Institute for College Access & Success in Oakland is looking to fill a communications position.  It's posted as director level, but if you know someone who is great but doesn't have quite the amount of experience listed, they are willing to consider hiring as a lower level and having the person work up to director.  For information, or to apply, click here.

The Bay Institute and Aquarium of the Bay joined forces in 2009. The new nonprofit partnership is uniquely poised with a timely focus on water, aquatic species, habitat protection, and the strong combination of The Bay Institute's science and policy with the Aquarium's education and outreach. They are looking for two key roles who will work with me to move our bold vision forward in conservation funding and awareness: VP of Development and VP of Communications. Both jobs are posted online at http://aquariumofthebay.org/about.aspx?q=10045.

Well Done!!! to Knox Communications

PRRT Member John Knox attended the Executive Challenge on December 1 at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.  John's role was to observe students' business simulation presentations to actual senior executives and then to provide formal comments about the strengths and gaps of each student's communication. The Executive Challenge serves as the "final examination" of first year MBA candidates' studies in how to lead effectively.  For more, see www.knoxcommunications.com.

"If you're looking for something meaningful to add to your life in the new year, why not start it off by helping a student learn to read?"

That's a great question.  To get the whole story, well told, click here.

Janet Lynn is a volunteer for Experience Corps, which operates in the Bay Area and as a national organization.  She is hoping that publication of this indepth opinion piece will encourage increased volunteer participation.  Ask her, here.

From PRRT Member Whitney Greer

Her new company is now launched --  The Brandularity Group -- and here's Whitney's latest article and sound advice:

Do Your Business Communications Pass the Coffee Test?

Why are comments spoken over a cup of coffee so much more compelling than the points made in meetings?  Because drinking inspires us to let down our hair, dish a little, and say something real.  There are many reasons - HR and legal - why we can't speak the same way at work.  However, people do respond better to real conversations than a formal download.
