Diane Gage Lofgren leads the critical work of positioning Kaiser Permanente in the hearts and minds of their key stakeholders through public relations, issues and brand management, and corporate communications.  Also co-leader of national marketing, she will give us insights into the ongoing, extraordinarily successful THRIVE campaign for Kaiser Permanente -- the nation's largest not-for-profit health plan, serving more than 8.6 million members.

Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, Diane led marketing/communications for several national and regional health care organizations, in addition to owning her own full-service public relations and marketing agency.  The author of national magazine articles on business and personal relationships, and management and marketing, she has published seven books and is currently at work on her eighth book.  The Public Relations Round Table is pleased to offer this instructive and dynamic program, guaranteed to help you thrive.

"Think of companies who don't have members in the club and should, or folks who are new in the area and will value our network. Invite them to the April lunch to meet other members and take in a great program."

Check out this latest posting from BACKTALK, the LCI blog.  Written by LCI's Brianne Miller (also a PRRT member and colleague), it's a ... well, David says it best in his commentary on the posting:

"Brianne, I'm glad you spelled out social media in such a succinct and clear manner. . .it's true, social media should always be a part of a strategic communications plan, not just a stand-alone item. And starting small and learning what works along the way is always the best policy."

Highlights from March

Don Spetner
Head of Korn/Ferry's PR Executive Search Practice

The pressures to perform at the top of the PR profession are fast evolving, along with emerging digital technologies.  Don Spetner's message was that for all of that, it's still a balancing act: keeping up with the new while still "creating a compelling message" as we ask ourselves, "what's the public perception going to be about our issues."  He said: "Everything's changed, and nothing's changed."

The scene: Networking. Learning. Enjoying.
at March 010 lunch
Other points, at a glance:
  • We have to master the new communications vehicles, especially for internal communications.  Conversely, we need to add wisdom to our inner techno-geek.
  • The "tyranny of advertising is over" and the next 10-15 years will be phenomenal for public relations as the business recovers..
  • If 2007 was a peak for the PR business, 2009 was a trough with the business suffering a big cut, in half.  However, we're now looking at a recovery, with the overall PR business up about 50% since last March.
  • Korn-Ferry has placed about 22 senior level jobs in the last months.  Companies that had cut to the core are now coming back.
  • If you're looking, definitely consider temporary, part-time work.  It's useful for many reasons, and it's getting better as a road back to a full-time job in the PR industry.
  • Advice for us all -- young, old or in the middle: Network.  Put yourself out there.  PR Round Table lunches are a great networking opportunity.
  • Social Media -- Understand it, get comfortable with it, and actively use.  For yourself and for your clients.
  • And, definitely use LinkedIn -- a social media environment that Korn/Ferry once (albeit briefly) perceived as a potential major competitor to its own business model.
  • Ageism?  You can have job-hunting success through traditional routes where your wisdom and ability to stay current will continue to be valued.
  • PRRT members are encouraged to deposit a current resume on the Korn/Ferry site.

In 2000 Don Spetner joined Korn/Ferry where his duties now include serving as a Senior Client Partner in the Corporate Affairs Executive Search practice. Prior to joining Korn/Ferry he was corporateActevacommunications VP for SunAmerica where he oversaw all advertising, public relations, executive communications, employee communications and community relations. Before joining SunAmerica he was Nissan North America VP of corporate communications. Prior to Nissan, he spent 10 years with three major advertising and public relations agencies: Grey Advertising, Bozell Inc., and RuderFinn Inc.

With his extraordinary range and experience, the Public Relations Round Table was honored to present Don Spetner for a very timely program.
