After great interest in last month's piece, we again asked PR Round Table member Whitney Greer if we could feature her latest In Flight Stories (IFS) posting. With a nod to classic David Byrne, you can see the full IFS at her very cool site. "Stop the Video TALKING HEADS" Laptop cameras, Flip video cams, and cheap editing services like Pixability are fueling Youtube-itis and a rash of bad videos. If these were only the work of bored students or budding directors, there wouldn't be anything to write about. However, the propagators of these unwatchable videos are often well-intentioned executives who think an unedited 10-minute sales speech, or an in-office executive interview, is somehow supporting marketing.
Until you've absorbed these lessons from Whitney:

Report on the July Program |
Dana King, CBS TV 5 News Anchor
Stepping out for a few hours from her own Daily Beast, award-winning journalist Dana King hit notes from every part of the current news media spectrum -- from evoking the heroic Edward R. Murrow, to those daily reminders that great, award-winning newsrooms like CBS TV5 are fighting to stay viable as they themselves become part of the the story at this tough time.
Spotlighting a recent trend among local and national news operations, she pointed to MMJ, aka Multi Media Journalists, who are required to set up, shoot, interview, edit and then present. Under these circumstances, with "no time to do the research, ask the right questions" she observed that "the viewer suffers the most" and it is up to news consuming viewers to let stations know that this is unacceptable.
Dana commented on Social Media formats and Apps (which are still jockeying for their own place among news consumers -- as well as searching for a viable business model), saying that they may be great for "instant gratification," but their reach is only likely to connect regularly with "hundreds of people" vs the still potent ability of TV to reach hundreds of thousands in a region.
QuestionTime: Dana King w/ PRRT Chair Mike Brown |
Further, with the fresh spector of Shirley Sherrod hanging in the air, Dana noted that while "they (Social Media) may be the newest, prettiest thing on the block," when it comes to reliable, quality news reporting, "there's no accountability, there's nobody to call" ... unlike CBS TV 5 Eyewitness News, where quality journalism is now "at the precipice and fighting to hold on."
During animated audience questioning, PRRT Member David Landis said, "Without true editorial-driven content, we just can't rely on social media." When it comes to an authentic business model, he pointed to research showing that millions of Americans continue to get their news primarily from television.
Dana's bottom line: "I'm all for making money, but not at the expense of quality journalism, which is why we invest in a news team." As to reach, she said that while traditional TV news numbers may be dwindling, "we're still the biggest game in town."
COMMENTARY
from PRRT Member & past board chair Jeff Album
I loved Dana's presentation for its honesty. She expressed a sense of loss and captured the sense that many of us with a background in journalism share -- that the glory days of the 4th estate are over.
I actually don't believe an impassioned call to station managers as Dana suggested offers any hope at all. We are looking at a broken business model in a new age of fractured audiences and multiple mediums competing for our attention.
I am more focused on what remains of quality journalism and the fewer, but still successful venues where that quality is supported financially. The WSJ, the (New York) Times, The Economist, NPR and Democracy Now. McNeil Lehrer, Charlie Rose, and whatever else continues the traditions we valued when we selected professions connected with print and broadcast media.
As you can see, I was stimulated and prompted to think very deeply about this topic.

Editor's Note:
While speaking at PRRT, Dana proudly pointed to the investigative team led by news room colleague Anna Werner. Only days later, and with a heavy heart, she emailed the update that Anna Werner had just been let go by the station and this report on her presentation should reflect that development. Watching that night's CBS 5 newscast, there was not a hint from Dana's professional demeanor that quality news in the Greater Bay Area had just suffered yet another blow. "Grace under fire," Heminway said.
"KPIX CBS5 investigative reporter Anna Werner has been let go due to financial reasons. News director Dan Rosenheim would only confirm that Werner is no longer at the station, but Lieberman said he was told by a source that it was a financial move. She has been at Channel 5 since 2004 and has earned several Emmys. Previously she was an investigative reporter at the CBS affiliate in Houston, KHOU. Her bio page at the CBS5 website, which had described her as "one of the nation's top investigative reporters," has been removed. But the " CBS 5 Investigates" page, showing her most recent work, is still up as is her CBS5 Facebook page."
Got an Opinion?
Are the TV chiefs of America killing the golden goose -- and harming their public good-based FCC licenses -- while in search of some mythical golden business plan?

Please tell me there is someplace Someplace where The words are not corrupted Where the ego has left the building Left the atmosphere For the moment Someplace Where The word stands Investigating Contemplating The life And the life in the word In the word All the joy And the lust The passion And the power The love The humanity Stands up through the word For the word Not the career chances Or the possibility of being laid Paid, praised dot dot dot etcetera Somewhere Someplace where The craft is the mission and the mission is the pleasure

Jeffrey Schaub is the former environment reporter at CBS5 (KPIX). He recently left the station to pursue a career in marketing and public relations. While at channel 5, Jeff won the prestigious Peabody award and several Emmy awards, too. He was a reporter covering transportation, education and general assignment stories and for several years he co-anchored the morning news program. Jeff says he's a very strong writer and highly motivated and a great team player. The state of modern communication, in a playlet acted out by a couple on Montgomery Street and overheard by Janet Lynn:
.. He: "I'll turn my cell off vibrate so I'm sure to hear it if you call later." She: "I'll make sure my earbud is connected while I'm driving in case you call me." (Listener caveat: Notice that each is depending on the other to make that call.)

California Watch Distribution Model, by the numbers As the number of investigative journalism units serving California shrinks, California Watch (a project of the award-winning Center for Investigative Reporting) is increasingly the place Californians are coming to rely upon.
Aside from the first-rate journalism they are doing, there is an understanding that in the midst of this tumultuous media landscape, a thoughtful and consistent distribution infrastructure will make all the difference.
