Matt Stiker, Chief Marketing Officer/Executive VP
San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau
From the March 2009 release announcing Matt Stiker's SFCVB appointment:
"We are extremely confident that Matt will elevate and strengthen our existing 'Only in San Francisco' brand strategy, and, as a result, generate visitor-related economic impact for the San Francisco region," said Joe D'Alessandro, president and CEO of the SFCVB. "I'm looking forward to working with the SFCVB's stakeholders to respond to the immediate needs of the hospitality industry as well as to develop long-term strategies for growing our leisure and meeting business," said Stiker. "While these are challenging times it's also an opportunity to grow our market share."

"Think of companies who don't have members in the club and should, or folks who are new in the area and will value our network. Invite them to the May lunch to meet other members and take in a great program."

They'll always have Paris...
"What are the odds of bumping into a fellow PRRT member in front of Monet's Water Lilies at l'Orangerie? Well, you can imagine my surprise last month when a very chic lady in red, a.k.a. Elizabeth Risberg, and her husband popped up beside me and my husband on our very first day in Paris. Alas, they were on their very last day (sigh), and were about to go into souvenir blitz mode before heading back to their hotel to pack. Trying hard to speak in hushed tones (they ask you for silence in the museum, and, indeed, the oval rooms do have a church-like quality if you ignore the visitors posing for photos in front of the art), we shared our travel impressions (ahem) and said happy good-byes. Next time I'll mention it when I'm heading out of town!"

This just in from the Planning Committee - PRRT Holiday Party Planning Begins Save the date: December 7 You won't want to miss the PR party of the year. Co-chairs Beverly Butler, APR, and Maureen Knoll have started getting places (Westin St. Francis) and people in place. In fact, they are thrilled to announce a dynamic duo is taking charge of the Silent Auction, the PRRT's biggest fundraiser of the year: Elizabeth Risberg and Janet Lynn will be amassing auction items (expect a call!) and handling all the details that make that portion of the party such a blast.

Highlights from MAY - Another Sold-Out Event
San Francisco Bureau Chief
The New York Times
Jesse McKinley has been The Times Bureau Chief in San Francisco since 2006. With The Bay Citizen (TBC) about to take up its responsibilities for the Times' two-page spreads (twice weekly in the Northern California edition), and simultaneously launch its separate TBC web site, Jesse broke it down for us:
- Editing and publishing duties will be retained by the Times and this bureau;
- Reporting will be carried out by TBC journalists;
- A Times editor in New York will oversee designated Times-exclusives, especially after the New York Times places its content behind a paywall early next year;
- TBC beats will include: government; the nine Bay Area counties; statewide news -- when it regards the Bay Area; crime; environment; and community affairs.
Jesse placed the Times partnership with the nonprofit TBC in the context of "hyperlocalism" and pointed out similar current/upcoming Times arrangements in Chicago, Texas and possibly Florida. At the time of the May lunch, TBC deadlines for the two-page spreads were to be:
- Early Thursday for the Friday edition;
- Friday noon for the Sunday edition.
Speaking about the trend to nonprofit journalism as a new business model, he said, "Really good journalists lost their jobs (and with) the nonprofit model, everyone's all a-Twitter." With the hiring of reporters for TBC, he pointed out that some of those really good journalists will now get a second chance.
Jesse was upbeat about the outlook for the Times at this tough time and these crossroads of traditional and new media. He observed that online technology has done wonders for journalism -- including "being able to add video and blogs" and that the Times, which has often been described by even its biggest fans as "a monolith," is now more diverse, including far more minorities and women in the newsroom.
For regional stories (from Oregon down to Bakersfield) of national interest, including Sacramento politics and California political campaigns, Jesse and his Times bureau staff will continue to be the go-to place for pitches and reporting. Contact him at jemcki@nytimes.com.
Again, thanks to

There is no guarantee that a last-minute attendee can be accommodated. Reservations shall be considered an agreement to pay in full for the PRRT meeting, event or function. Members not abiding by the reservation, payment and cancellation policy, nor becoming current with past-due payments, will not be allowed to attend future functions until payments are made in full. They also will be subject to review for membership at the beginning of the following membership year.
