Chair's Letter |
The San Francisco Public Relations Round Table (PRRT) is completing another terrific year.
We're finishing up our monthly luncheon program, with another year of vibrant speakers, great meals at the Taj Campton Place Hotel and invaluable networking time together. The year's capstone event is coming up soon on December 7 - our Holiday party at the St Francis Hotel, once again featuring Matier and Ross and their annual recap of the year's political follies and foibles. Reserve here
We're also preparing another round of scholarship offers to Northern California's best undergraduate and graduate students specializing in public relations. The proceeds from the Holiday party contribute significantly to the scholarship fund.
And we're preparing to install a new cadre of officers and Board members to step in and lead the oldest continuing PR organization in the country into its 72nd year. Let's take a moment to introduce your new leaders for 2011, and well into the future.
The following officers were approved by the PRRT board of governors at the November 2 board meeting:
Chair: Patricia L. Harden, Harden Communications Partners
Vice Chair: Sheri Cardo, Sonoma Land Trust
 Treasurer: Debra Charlesworth, consultant
Secretary: Maureen Knoll, Delta Dental of California
Four board members were voted in at the October election. Their three-year terms begin January 2011:
Mary Currie, Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District
 John Goodwin, Metropolitan Transportation Commission
 Eric Steckel, Bars + Tone
 Gary Tobin, Tobin and Associates
And a sterling group of board members continue their service for another year:
 Beverly Butler, Wells Fargo Bank
 Jill Center, consultant
 Hatti L. Hamlin, consultant
 Blodwen Tarter, Golden Gate University
Please seriously consider becoming involved in a leadership role in your club. The easiest way is to help out on one of the many committees that keep the wheels turning. Contact the chair of our nominating committee, Rose Anne Raphael, to get involved.

Don't Miss Out...
Reserve for Holiday Party Today! |
Reservations are coming in at a brisk pace for the annual Holiday Party, to be held Dec. 7 at the Westin St. Francis, according to event chairs Maureen Knoll and Beverly Butler. We are fast approaching room capacity, so if you plan to attend, please don't wait another day.
The once-a-year bash offers complimentary wines from Sonoma's finest wineries and a repast prepared by the Paris-trained chefs at the St. Francis that includes specialties prepared just for our group. We will enjoy a salad of baby bibb lettuce, port wine-poached pear and glazed pecans, followed by entre choices including breast of chicken stuffed with mushrooms and artichokes, spinach-stuffed baked salmon with vegetable succotash or a special vegetarian option of grilled Portobello mushroom and butternut squash ravioli. For dessert, the hotel's French pastry chef is preparing a unique pear tart topped with a fresh blueberry compote and vanilla sauce.
Entertainment will include insider stories from political commentators and columnists Phil Matier and Andy Ross, sure to be of interest in this volatile political scene.
A highlight of the event is our Silent Auction benefiting the Philip N. McCombs Scholarship fund. Generous members and their clients have already donated some lovely packages and gifts, but it's not too late for you to show your largesse. Please see related article below for more details.

Donations Still Welcome for Silent Auction
Wine. Books. Event passes. Spa treatment. Gift certificate to a local restaurant. Artwork. A night's (or more) stay at a hotel or luxury condo. Since this is our only fundraiser for the Philip N. McCombs Scholarship, your generous donation to the auction will help deserving PR students. It also will give us partygoers a chance to bid on your fabulous gifts - just in time for the holidays!
Can't think of a gift? If you prefer to contribute cash, the Holiday Party Committee will purchase one for you!
Just fill out the contribution form click here. If you have questions or need more information, contact one of us, and we'll be glad to help. Even if you are not a member of the SFPRRT, you can help students entering the public relations profession by donating to this worthy cause.
Thanks in advance for helping make this year's Silent Auction an event to remember!
See you December 7th
Reserve while still time; invite friends and/or associates to come, too. It's always a swell party.

30 years by KGO radio. With more than a million listeners a week, it's been called a "well-oiled news machine." Ed gave us an outline of what it takes to keep the KCBS news machine running. While proud of KCBS' historic accomplishments, he's especially proud of the professionalism of his news team, and their consistent grace under pressure. Rather than looking back at trophies won, his eyes are on the road ahead. Two solid examples: the addition of FM broadcast capability (which is pulling in the younger demographic that KCBS will need to thrive in the future), and the savvy use of social media such as Twitter to harvest story tips and connect with listeners. As we were being seated, we learned that Campton Place Hotel had that morning been awarded its first Michelin Star. For those not able to join the well-fed, appreciative crowd, this INSIDE RADIO interview by Special Features Editor Mike Kinosian, has an excellent overview of many of the themes voiced by our speaker, Ed Cavagnaro.

Media and presentation skills trainings do a great job of preparing spokespeople to communicate with polish, professionalism and panache, but what happens months later when they are facing a significant media interview or a keynote presentation at a major conference and the skills they learned are already rusty?
For the first time, The Gonsoulin Group is opening up its popular corporate training session, Coach, to individual public relations, corporate communications, advertising and marketing professionals on preparing spokespeople for successful outcomes.
Learn how to:
- Craft topic-specific messages that align with corporate messaging
- Develop and conduct role-playing scenarios
- Push an executive in a high pressure or negative practice exercise
- Address spokesperson nerves and problematic behaviors
- Provide constructive critiques with difficult personalities
- "Actively" staff media interviews

The annual fundraiser for Experience Corps Bay Area will be Saturday, November 20.
Experience Corps Bay Area matches the experience and talent of older adults with elementary students in San Francisco, Oakland, and San Rafael. Children improve academic performance and build relationships with committed volunteers, and the schools become more caring and personal places. This year's fundraiser will be held in the hills above Mill Valley, at Savory Thymes' Hillside Gardens - a venue not open otherwise to the general public.
The mission of Savory Thymes is to convene artists, grassroots organizations and activists in order to cross pollinate ideas, build relationships and alliances, and provide a space to galvanize support for a wide variety of social and environmental initiatives. www.savorythymesevents.org.

Preview of a Story Coming in Late November
California Takes Initiative on Alzheimer's
by Jill Center
As founding Communications Director (1997-2008) for the Alzheimer's Association here in Northern California, I was pleased to see real progress on the California State Plan for Alzheimer's, the result of a joint advocacy/media campaign that we began just after mid-decade. California is currently one of the few states in the U.S. facing how to cope with the coming dementia tsunami.
Following are:
an update from my friend Ruth Gay, Alzheimer's Association Advocacy Director, who was instrumental in the creation of the planning process, and then its implementation,
along with a letter published this past Saturday in the New York Times by Sherrie Matza, a member of the State of California Statewide Eldercare Policy Task Force charged by the Governor with responsibility for the State Alzheimer's Plan.
From Ruth Gay:
The past year has focused on community meetings intended to reach members of the public who have lived with Alzheimer's disease, who have questions or concerns about a loved one with memory loss, or who work with these families. More than 1,000 members of the public had the opportunity to contribute their first-hand experiences, hopes, disappointments, ideas, criticisms and solutions.
The State Plan, as it will soon be presented to the Governor - for late November publication - has these key draft recommendations:
Goal 1:
Eliminate Stigma - Heighten public awareness through culturally appropriate public education campaigns
Goal 2:
Ensure Access to High Quality, Coordinated care in the setting of Choice
Goal 3:
Develop an Alzheimer's proficient, culturally competent workforce
Goal 4:
Advance Research
Goal 5:
Establish a comprehensive approach to support family caregivers
NEW YORK TIMES November 6, 2010
Facing the Scourge of Alzheimer's
To the Editor:
I've spent more than two decades hoping that a "magic pill" was on the horizon, only to become more realistic. But we'll certainly get no closer to this "magic pill" if we don't treat Alzheimer's as the national crisis it is and develop a concerted federal policy to increase research financing.
Equally important, however, is to equip caregivers with the necessary tools to improve and maintain the quality of life for the person they love. Too often, the burdens of caregiving lead to illness, stress and depression. It doesn't have to be that way.
I know. I spent years caring for my mother and didn't have the knowledge that exists today. We can do better. We must.
Sherrie Matza San Francisco, Oct. 28, 2010
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Here's some good advice from Erin O'Toole, Corporate and Foundation Specialist at the Alzheimer's Association - and Past Chair, Philanthropy Day at AFP Silicon Valley Chapter.
As an employee, or employer, you can act to move the dial on this disease and support your co-workers coping with it. Visit www.actionalz.org/champions_at_work.asp
today to learn more about Alzheimer's disease, why it matters to you, what you can do about it, and how the Alzheimer's Association can help.
If you know of anyone who may need assistance with a loved one dealing Alzheimer's or any other dementia during the holidays, contact the Alzheimer's Association 24/7 Helpline: 1-800-272-3900.
Best wishes to you and your family for a healthy, happy Thanksgiving!!!
