One of the great things about the wines produced in Bordeaux, in addition to their outstanding quality and ageability, is the fact that most Château hold back a large percentage of their production for release at a later date.  Despite the wines being stored for multiple years, when they are released for purchase on the open market the discerning wine buyer can often find some great deals.  We here at Marquis Wine Cellars have been looking over the price lists from some of our Bordeaux suppliers and have purchased a selection of wines that would be a great addition to any wine cellar.

We start today's offer with four vintages from arguably the most famous and sought after Grand Cru, Château Haut-Brion and the stellar 2010 Château Leoville-Poyferré.  All of which are already in stock at the store.  We follow this up with three older offerings, two of which come from the incredible 2005 vintage.

Château Haut Brion 2006 Pessac - $956.43 pre-tax ($1099.90) - 9 bottles in stock.

"The 2006 Haut-Brion performed even better from bottle than it did from barrel. Sixty-four percent of the production went into this wine, and while it displays the vintage's powerful tannins and structure, it possesses superb concentration, and the minerality/scorched earth notes of a great Haut-Brion. Medium to full-bodied, with perhaps not quite the fleshiness of the 2005 or 2000, it is built more along the lines of the 1998 and 1996. It is a brilliant effort displaying sensational purity, texture, and length that should be exceptionally long-lived. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2035."

Château Haut Brion 2008 Pessac - $1043.39 pre-tax ($1199.90) - 3 bottles in stock.

"This is profound! 2008 Haut-Brion: The extraordinary 2008 Haut-Brion is a candidate for -wine of the vintage.- Composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, it reveals more evolution and complexity in its large-scaled perfume. The dense purple color is followed by a sweet nose of creosote, asphalt, blueberries, black currants and jammy raspberries, sweet tannins, a savory, fleshy mouthfeel and a stunning finish. This incredibly pure, noble wine was produced from one of the estate's smallest crops (only 7,000 cases produced versus the usual 12,000 cases). It should drink well for three decades or more."

Château Haut Brion 2011 Pessac - $956.43 pre-tax ($1099.90) - 9 bottles in stock.

"The unbelievably superb 2011 Haut-Brion (a tiny production of 7,600 cases from a blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 19% Cabernet Franc) exhibits a classic nose of subtle smoldering embers, warm rocks, black currants, new saddle leather, spice box and high quality, unsmoked cigar tobacco. The color is a dense ruby/purple to the edge, and the wine cuts a serious as well as broad swath across the palate. The most amazing aspect of this terroir is that the wine, despite all its power and richness, literally dances on the palate, as if it were a 90 pound ballerina. This brilliant 2011 should evolve quickly, hitting its prime in 7-8 years, and drink beautifully for 20-25 years."

Château Haut Brion 2012 Pessac - $869.48 pre-tax ($999.90) - 9 bottles in stock.

"The 2012 Haut Brion (65% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc) is certainly one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage, with a dense purple color, classic nose of crushed rock, lead pencil shavings, black raspberry, blueberry and flowers. The wine shows subtle barbecue smoke notes in the background, but is full-bodied, stunningly concentrated and builds incrementally, yet finishes with luxurious, almost extravagant amounts of fruit and intensity. From only 46% of the production, this is an absolutely remarkable effort from the Dillon family and their winemaking team of the two Jean-Philippes. Drink it over the next 30-40 years."

Château Leoville Poyferre 2010, St. Julien - $304.26 pre-tax ($350.00)

"The wine out distances both Leoville Las Cases and Leoville Barton, but all three of them are compelling efforts. Full-bodied, dense purple in color, with floral notes intermixed with blackberries, cassis, graphite and spring flowers, this full-bodied, legendary effort is long and opulent, with wonderfully abundant yet sweet tannin, a skyscraper-like mid-palate and a thrilling, nearly one-minute finish. This spectacular effort from Poyferre that should drink well for 30+ years."

A Few Older Vintages on the way.  These wines are expected to arrive at Marquis Wine Cellars in early July of this year.

Château Lafon Rochet 2005 St. Estephe - $121.65 pre-tax ($139.90)

"At present, this structured, backward 2005 is dominated by the vintage's substantial tannins. It exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color, a reticent but promising bouquet of sweet black fruits intermixed with weedy tobacco, licorice, and leather characteristics. Medium-bodied and powerful, with excruciating tannin, but promising potential, patience is most definitely required. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030."

Château Prieure Lichine 2005 Margaux - $143.39 pre-tax ($164.90)

"The finest Prieure-Lichine I have ever tasted, the sensational 2005 has unquestionably benefitted from the improvements made at this property as well as the consultation work of Stephane Derenoncourt. Its dense purple color is accompanied by a glorious perfume of forest floor, blackberries, incense, and cassis. Opulent, with sweet tannin for the vintage, excellent purity, and a savory, broad, expansive mouthfeel that lingers on the palate, it possesses the delicacy of a terrific Margaux as well as enough concentration and power to give it an extra dimension. This wine should be drinkable in 4-5 years, and last for 25 or more. Bravo!"

La Dame de Montrose 2010 St. Estephe - $173.83 pre-tax ($199.90)

"One of the best second wines, and possibly the best since the 1990 is the 2010 La Dame de Montrose. This represents 36% of the production and is a blend of two grapes - 64% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Merlot. A superb second wine, opulent and substantively textured, it shares more in common with a flamboyant, exuberant year such as 2009 than most 2010s. Dense purple, its oodles of fruit, luxurious mouthfeel and terrific finish make it a sleeper of the vintage. It's a wine to buy in abundant quantities and drink over the next 10-15+ years."
