Today we are very pleased to offer you an extensive selection of 2012 red Burgundies from Domaine Faiveley, plus one 2012 white from a little appellation called Batard-Montrachet.

About The Domaine

Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley has been a true family endeavor through many generations. The exceptional wines produced by the Faiveley family are the result of a deep respect for the environment as well as a strong attention to detail in every facet of the winemaking process. Domaine Faiveley is located in France, at the heart of the viticultural region of Burgundy, between Dijon and Beaune in Nuits-Saint-Georges.

Historically based in the capitol of Côte-de-Nuits, the Faiveley family has progressively extended its domaine and today owns vineyards in the finest areas of Burgundy: Gevrey-Chambertin, Pommard, Volnay, Puligny-Montrachet, Mercurey and more. The vineyards are very fragmented; the average size of each appellation is approximately one hectare. As such, the number of bottles produced of each wine is very limited.  Faiveley harvests over 10 hectares of Grands Crus and nearly 25 hectares of Premiers Crus. Among these appellations, many are owned exclusively by the Faiveley family; Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos des Issarts, Beaune 1er Cru Clos de l'Ecu and Corton Clos des Cortons Faively Grand Cru.

2012 Gevrey Chambertin "Combe Aux Moines" 1er Cru - $97.00

"Bright, dark red. Black cherry, licorice and a whiff of game on the brooding nose. Sweet, saline and densely packed but a baby today, with subtle dark fruit and game flavors currently cut off by chewy, slightly tough tannins. Quite unevolved right now."

- Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Jan 2014     90-92 points

2012 Nuits St. Georges "Les Porets St. Georges" 1er Cru - $111.00

"Good medium red. Aromas of black cherry, menthol and sweet oak, lifted by topnotes of rose petal and violet. A step up in flavor and depth from the foregoing Nuits samples, showing lovely cut and lift to the perfumed flavors of sweet black cherry and menthol. At once chewy and refined, finishing with ripe tannins, attractive salinity and lingering perfume."

- Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Jan 2014     91-94 points

2012 Nuits St. Georges "Les Damodes" 1er Cru - $117.00

"Bright dark red. Captivating precision to the aromas of flowers, crushed stone, chocolate and cardamom. Sweet, silky and smooth but with excellent energy to the dense berry and spice flavors. Still a bit youthfully tight but spreads out impressively on the long, perfumed finish. This weightless wine leaves the salivary glands quivering."

- Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Jan 2014     91-93 points

2012 Nuits St. Georges "Aux Chaignots" 1er Cru - $120.00

"Bright medium red. Musky black cherry and blackberry aromas are complicated by an exotic suggestion of white fruits. Juicy, precise and youthfully imploded, offering pretty flavors of raspberry, flowers and spices. Not an opulent style but vibrant and firmly built."

- Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Jan 2014     90-93 points

2012 Corton "Clos des Cortons" - $260.00

"Bright, deep red. Deep aromas of black cherry, crushed rock and graphite. Dense, sappy and energetic, offering outstanding depth to its soil-driven black cherry and saline flavors. Delivers an uncanny combination of chewy texture and verve. Finishes with palate-staining length and lift, as tactile as a solid. A great vin de terroir for the cellar."

- Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Jan 2014     93-96 points

2012 Clos de Vougeot - $260.00

"Good medium red. Reticent aroma of black cherry and menthol. Juicy, herbal and on the dry side; quite backward and savory. Most impressive today on the back end, which shows suave, broad tannins and lovely subtle lingering fruit. Long on potential but youthfully clenched at present. Faiveley owns one parcel at the top of the Clos and two at the bottom. Fruit from the less-good of the two bottom pieces was previously sold off but these vines now produce a lower crop level and more concentrated fruit as Faiveley went to cordon royat pruning here several years ago."

- Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Jan 2014     91-94 points

2012 Echezeaux - $260.00 (very limited availability)

"(from a warm southern exposure in the lieu-dit Combe d'Orveaux; aging in two-thirds new oak): Medium red. Aromas of red cherry, cinnamon and earth. Silky, suave and sweet, with a slightly candied quality to the cherry, spice and mint flavors. Savory, stylish Echezeaux with a long, saline, soil-driven finish. This very ripe wine will nonetheless require four or five years of cellaring to absorb some of its tannins."

- Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Jan 2014     91-94 points

2012 Latricières-Chambertin - $292.00 (very limited availability)

"Good bright, dark red. Complex, high-pitched aromas of pomegranate, nutmeg, orange peel, licorice and pepper. Nuanced and stylish but youthfully tight, showing outstanding definition and lift its tart red berry and stone flavors. Finishes long and brisk, with outstanding energy. This should enjoy a long and graceful evolution in bottle; my range may eventually turn out to be conservative."

- Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Jan 2014     92-95 points

2012 Mazis-Chambertin - $324.00 (very limited availability)

"Good medium red. Distinctly riper on the nose than the Latricieres, even a touch stewy. Then rich and wild on the palate, with a brooding quality to the dark fruit, spice and graphite flavors. Showing little in the way of easy sweetness today but very closed. More saline than fruity or floral on the persistent finish. This wine needs longer elevage, noted Hervet, who expected to bottle it in April--a good three months later than the Latricieres. Certainly in an awkward stage today."

- Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Jan 2014     90-93? points

2012 Batard Montrachet - $433.00

"Bright medium yellow. Perfumed, highly complex nose melds orange zest, minerals, white pepper and noble herbs. Juicy, spicy and tightly wound, with outstanding energy currently keeping the wine's fat fruit under wraps. Delivers a captivating savory umami character on the back end, which is very slow to unfold. The finish is very long and remarkably weightless for a grand cru. A very distinctive Batard with a promising future."
