Tenuta Il Poggione is one of the three original producers of Brunello di Montalcino and began making the wine in the late 19th century together with Biondi-Santi and Frescobaldi. For more than a century, Il Poggione has been one of the leading producers of Brunello and has always made and continues to make its Brunello from 100% Sangiovese grapes grown on estate-owned vineyards. Il Poggione estate lies in the southwest subzone of the appellation where its vines grow at more than 400 meters above sea level. The cool evening and morning temperatures created by this altitude help the fruit to ripen more slowly and as a result Il Poggione is able to produce profound, complex Brunello's with great aging potential. The western subzone of the appellation is also blessed by its proximity to the sea and the gentle sea breeze from the Thyrrenian Sea brings excellent ventilation to their vineyards. As a result of the dryness of the breeze, Il Poggione vineyards are nearly rot and mildew free. Il Poggione vines are also among the oldest in the appellation. Because the roots reach so deeply into the subsoil, even during arid or hot vintages, their vines are able to find the water table. The stress caused by their search for water makes the fruit even richer and the wine even more profound and long-lived. Il Poggione believes in "promiscuous" farming. Winemaker Fabrizio Bindocci has not planted vines in every possible growing site. Instead they grow olives in certain fields and some fields are used for grazing of our Maremma cattle and others are even allowed to remain fallow. They believe that this is an essential element of the terroir. The entire line-up of wines from Il Poggione is very impressive and well worth discovering if you are not already familiar with them.
2009 Rosso - $32.90
"The 2009 Rosso di Montalcino is a lush, fruity wine with good body and an attractive personality. The Rosso is aged predominantly in 100-hectoliter barrels, although 30% of the wine is aged in French oak tonneaux. Over the last few years the estate has moved towards a simpler style of Rosso, which is a shame as the older Rossi were wines of real pedigree and class. This is simply a tasty, well-made wine, but not more. Count me among the estate's fans who miss the more serious style of Rosso that was common here until just a few years ago. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014."

2009 Brunello - $67.90
"Il Poggione's 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a bit of a bruiser today, but it is also one of the few 2009s that is built for the cellar. Smoke, new leather, licorice, spices, scorched earth all wrap around the palate in a dark, voluptuous Brunello with plenty of intrigue. This is one of the richer, more intense wines of the year, but all the elements are very nicely balanced."

2006 Brunello Riserva - $104.90
"The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is another superb Brunello from Il Poggione. The ripeness of the vintage meets a classic sense of structure as this bold, full-bodied wine takes shape in the glass. The 2006 doesn't have the elegance or finesse of the 2004, instead it offers a decidedly more virile, masculine expression of Sangiovese. Dark cherries, tobacco, smoke and underbrush wrap around a wall of tannin as the finish builds to a majestic close. Il Poggione's Brunello remains one of the best values in fine, cellar- worthy wine."

2003 Vin Santo - $44.90 for 375ml
"The 2003 Sant'Antimo IL Poggione Vin Santo does an excellent job of showing Vin Santo aromas of candied fruit, caramel, roasted chestnut and grilled herb. It's a light and easygoing expression that is a pleasure to drink with dried tarts or biscuits. Drink: 2014-2022."

Cantine Neirano is a small DOCG estate, founded in 1911 by Antonio Sperone beginning with fortified wines and vermouth in a small cellar just outside Turin. The Tenute Neirano Estate began as an offshoot of Sperone in 1983 to focus on high end wines in Piemonte. They purchased a 25 hectare property in the heart of Monforte d'Alba, a region famous for its compressed sandstone soils, crafting intense, structured wines with great power and longevity. It is there, in an ancient 17th century villa, that this fine Barolo is produced. It spent 3 years in large format Slovenian oak and 1 year in bottle before leaving the winery for export.
2009 Barolo - $32.90
"This producer has made an outstanding Barolo 2009 - no easy feat in this vintage. Thisbottling is made from top vineyards in Barolo and La Morra. It has a gorgeous bouquet of rose, leather and a whiff of tar. The palate delivers a hint of carob, spice and succulent black cherry notes. Impeccably balanced, this is elegant and complex. A textbook Barolo."
