Dominus Estate

2011 Napanook - $74.00

"83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot and 8% Cabernet Franc.  Aromas of licorice, pepper, herbs, chicory and leather, plus a hint of lemon zest.  In a distinctly herbal style, with cocoa and coffee bean notes complicating the flavors of cassis leaf and pepper.  Shows a fairly fine-grained texture and good length but the finish betrays slightly dry tannins and a continuing leafy quality."

2011 Dominus - $160.00

"86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc.  Bright red-ruby.  Riper on the nose than the Napanook bottling, offering scents of redcurrant, espresso and bitter chocolate.  Sweeter in the mouth as well, showing considerably more fat and attractive floral lift to its flavors of dark berries, herbs, pepper, licorice and spices.  Fine-grained and concentrated but still a bit youthfully compact, in need of at least a few years of bottle aging to absorb some of its tannins."

About

Dominus is the proprietary red wine produced in the heart of Napa Valley by Christian Moueix and his team.  Since 1983, their goal has been to express the unique terroir found at the historic Napanook Vineyard.  Dominus has become known since its first release for its complexity and earthy character, which pay tribute to the Napanook terroir.  Christian Moueix truly believes that producing a wine begins in the vineyard.  For that reason, each vintage is unique with different varietal blends reflecting the vineyard and climate conditions of that particular year.

Domenico Clerico

2008 Barolo "Pajana" - $144.90

"Since 2006, this and the Ciabot Mentin have been aged for two years in 80% new and 20% second-use barriques.  Medium red.  Very fresh aromas and flavors of redcurrant, dried flowers, tobacco, graphite and earth.  Conveys an almost painful impression of energy in the mouth, showing superb focus and finesse.  Finishes very long and penetrating, with firm but elegant tannins."

About

Domenico Clerico is one of the most respected names across the Barolo region, and his wines are recognized for their high quality vinification and exceptional character.  Domenico's father sold grapes from his 4-5 hectares to the local Cantina Sociale Terre del Barolo and the local markets. In 1976 Domencio took over the business and decided to start making wine. In 1977 he purchased a small plot in the Bussia area of Monforte, resulting in the production of his very first Barolo, Bricotto Bussia in 1979. Domenico continue to increase his holdings over the years, specifically in the Monforte area, securing top vineyards in Ginestra, Pajana and Mosconi. At this point the total vineyard holdings were 21 ha.  Between 2005 & 2006, Domenico leased vineyards in Serralunga, the first time he has worked with vineyards outside Monforte. The Barolo from Serralunga is called Aeroplan Servaj (wild Aeroplan in Piedmontese), Domenico's nickname given to him by his father.  In July 2011, Domenico finished building a brand new winery in Monforte, it was designed and created to help improve the quality of the wines.  The wines come from astounding wine-growing lands located in four of the greatest vineyards in Monforte, namely Ginestra, Bussia, Pajana, and Mosconi.
